So does this mean I need to pull the engine and clean it with a toothbrush?

IT'S TOO LATE MAN. You killed his dog.

Ok full disclosure: The other day I was messing around in my messy garage and decided I should wipe out the oil drain pan from Feb and put it away. So as I was wiping the corner where some oil had collected there was the missing crush washer that created this thread. Either that or it was the new one I thought I put on in Feb...NAW!

To answer your original question, as far as I know the crush washer exists purely to stop it from leaking. No leak, no issue. Two changes ago, I forgot to put one on but I really did not feel like buy another round of oil, so I left it. I still slept pretty well at night.

If you are fast you can pull the plug, put the washer on, and reinstall it all while losing less than a quart.

Indy forgot the washer one time and I found it after work when I walked up from the rear to see far more than just a drip of oil under it  After a very pucker inducing drive where I watched the pressure gauge more than the road my indy threw it on the lift and I watched them fix it without doing a full change. Then they topped it off and it hasn't been a problem since.

That is some funny stuff. Your below still holds true today witness my experience at the local Toyota dealership I reported on a while back about scammy brake inspection defects. Slimeballs!

Only Macster can turn "Just use a new crush ring" into a thousand-word essay involving weeping virgins.

I don't think "callous" and "had to reuse a crush ring because I didn't have one handy" are necessarily equivalent.

If you're operating under the assumption that every service tech out there is more fastidious than every owner who does his own service, you're fooling yourself. Techs don't get paid a ton, and they're often getting harped on to churn through the cars. I have quit using some dealership service departments because of issues ranging from simple mistakes to outright lying on paperwork to skip doing the steps on the "XX point inspections" they love to advertise.

I'm glad The Rule did not exist back then.

So one time I re-used a crush washer because it had stuck up there and I thought - "Meh." And now I live in a group home for men.

Thank you for reading this, have a great weekend.
