I got started this evening. Got the car up in the air and drained the oil. LN Engineering provides a bottle for an oil sample.

I ran into a minor snag. I am using a Quickjack to raise the car and then will use the truck/SUV adapters to get ii in the air higher. To get the adapters under the car, I need to raise it and then lower onto blocks so there is room to place the adapters. The blocks I have to set the car on were too tall to get under the tires. I forgot to calculate the wheel droop into the equation. I’ll get some shorter blocks. I would prefer a Maxjax for this.

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day so I won’t get much time in there garage. I’ll probably pull the underbody tray and drain the trans fluid.

Was able to get an hour out in the garage this afternoon. I removed the six bolts connecting each cv axle to the transmission. I also drained the transmission fluid. It looked pretty good considering I don’t know how old it is.

I had a few minutes to cut open the Napa Gold oil filter. These filters are a pain to take apart even with a filter cutter. Long term, I need to find a better way to remove the paper portion from the metal “frame”.

Day 3

Today was pretty productive. The car is now up on the air on the SUV/truck adapters and have at least 24” of clearance with more in some areas. I removed all, but the front underbody tray. I will probably need to remove the front one to access the drive shaft. I also removed the cross brace and installed the engine support bar.

Lastly, I removed the slave cylinder. Getting to the two 13 mm bolts took a little thinking. I finally found that a 1/4” ratchet with a short socket made it easier to get at the bolts.

Shift cables, front mount, and driveshaft will be the next step. Hope to do that tomorrow.

Spent another hour and a half in the garage this afternoon. I popped of the ball ends of the two shift cables with two screws drivers. It was much easier than I expected. Once the shift cables were disconnected, they were removed from the brackets on the transmission. Next, the reverse light switch was removed from the trans. Again, an easy step.

The least fun part of the process so far was up. Removing the bolts mating the trans to the engine. I was able to get 6 of the 8 bolts out without much trouble. They are a combo of 15mm, 16mm, and one 10mm triple square. I was having trouble getting to the top two bolts. I figure lowering the transmission a little might give me more access to them.

I will need to disconnect the driveshaft to be able to lower the transmission. I’ll work on that tomorrow. With that car in the air and the front driveshaft spins so I will need to figure out how to “lock” it in place. There are three bolts to remove. On the Jeeps I’ve owned, all I had to do was shift into 4WD. I don’t have that option for the 996.
