Dem's Latin, probably vulgar. I've never seen the word used in the context as implemented by Herr Drifter - the only place I remember seeing it written out is the hardware store...
Yet another instance where being American has let me down. That makes 2 - the other being our mayonnaise. It's horrible once you've tried fresh home-made mayo.
