Calling all simulator enthusiasts

Post by pcasanova » Sat Feb 16, 2019 8:36 am

So I've been tasked with coming up with some options for a Simulator for our work Rec Room.

All in budget is $15K.
We our mixed between Racing and Flight. We do want want to use Oculus (or similar).

Found this https://fasetech.com/about
See Video

Another is https://dofreality.com/#p6

Open for ideas & recommendation. We have wood workers, but not metal fabricators, so limited on the DIY front.

A couple of people in our local PCA have simulators. I'll have to ask, because I know less about simulators than I do about the 996. ;)

Just be certain to get durable components since it will get heavy use. We set up 4 of them at the museum and they get abused since they have a bunch of different people using them.

What did you go with and roughly how much was each? Warranty / support is a concern.

We had a high school engineering class put ours together from scratch. They had a budget of $12,000, but that was for 4 of them. So, non-motion and probably not in the same league as what you are doing. But, from memory, I know they used xBoxes as the gaming system, then Forza as the software. They bought a seat and rig as one unit, and other than the gearshifter stand (those broke in the first 3 months), the seats and rigs have held up well (nearly 5 years now). The steering wheel, pedal box and gearshifter were sourced from the same company and they initially went high end on them, but I don't recall the brand. I think the steering wheel alone was $500 or so. Then, they put Buttkicker vibrators mounted under the seats. I think the steering wheels had vibrators and feedback also (sorry, I'm not a video game guy). They used 55" monitors mounted on the rigs for visuals.

WOW, that sounds really cool. Bonus for getting kids involved.

We're currently facing battles with the motion sim because manufactures < $10K don't seem to be responsive. Getting the team ready for NON-Motion if they don't respond, but then will try to get 2 stationary units so we can compete if game allows.

Motion is vastly overrated for driving sims. The latency usually causes more problems than the motion solves. Good display set up well with good wheel and (especially!) a good brake pedal and you'll be good to go. Motion remains a gimmick until (and some with more knowledge on this than I ever will say perhaps even at) the true nosebleed level costs.
