So are Volvo SUVs POS?

Post by 32wildbilly » Tue Sep 15, 2020 2:01 pm

The wife is looking for an suv to replace the Rav that she wants to give to a gc and likes the Volvos. I made the mistake of showing her the XC40 and she thinks "it's so cute!"

Are they total crap?

I think it was the XC90 that I was looking at years ago when I got the P!g. It looked like a nice car, but I ended up not making it to the test drive phase due to the non-optional 3rd row. This was shortly after #1 was born and we still had 3 50lb dogs. The object was for something big enough to throw everyone in for a 13 hour trip to the FL grand parents. The problem with the Volvo was that with the 3rd row folded down (required to make it usable for luggage and dogs) it left large gaps in the floor that were going to cause a dog to lose their leg.

My point being, if part of it's purpose is it's cargo space, look closely at it with the seats up and folded to make sure there aren't gotchas that are going to piss you off down the road.

Sometime before abandoning Rennlist (dammit) I seem to remember Jake saying he was starting to work on P!g motors (they can bore score as well). Maybe convince her to get a P!g and then see if Jake will give you a repeat customer discount

I'm many years out of the Volvo game, but I am interested in seeing opinions.

After years of cycling through various 4x4/AWD SUVs, our Grand Cherokee is the closest-to-perfect fit for our needs - but I haven't even glanced at Volvos in ages...

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

Gone hunting with Alec Baldwin and Dick Cheney. Back soon.

No they're fairly well built and of course safe because that is a pillar of Volvo vehicles. All of the controls are on a touch interface now, so that's something to consider if you're not into that. There are only a few mechanical buttons for mainly emergency functions. We rented an XC60 and it was fine. Nothing really stood out to me that made me think I wanted one but I'm about as far from an SUV guy as you can get. (We had a baby and I asked my wife if my next car could be a 2-door. ) ((SHE SAID YES! :o ))

My co-worker has an XC90 I'm happy to ask her about but I wouldn't expect technical feedback.

Has your wife seen the new Rav 4 Prime? The only car Toyota makes right now that's faster than it is the 3.0 Supra. The Rav 4 Prime is faster than the 2.0 Supra from a dig. Cool stuff... I'm talking Mrs. Strangelove into one over the normal Rav 4 Hybrid. Our only hangup is availability but I have a hookup in Toyota corporate that has blessed my calling upon him when the time is right.

My wife 2007 Volvo XC90 - 10 years, no problems - she wanted a new XC90, but couldn't afford it at the time. Got her a Tahoe. She still wants a Volvo XC90 :?

My oldest 2011 Volvo XC60 - 3 years - no problems
My youngest 2014 Volvo XC60 - just got it... so far so good!
Me - 2012 Volvo S60 - 9 years - no problems at all

I'll have to look up that version of the Rav. The neighbor has a newish Rav and the wife thinks it's ugly so...She is attracted to weird SUVs: Nissan Xterra, Land Rovers, Gbox(whew glad I talked her out of that one), Jeep Wrangler(until we rented one in Grand Cayman and she almost fell out of it as she forgot it was three feet in the air) and now the Volvo XC40R. I hate all controls on the screen! Now get off my lawn!

"Happy Pose"??? That looks like the "Ima kick your face off your head!" pose if I ever saw one. How many years in Taekwondo does she have?
