OK, so yesterday I took the car to the audio shop that's about a block from the auto museum/law firm. Turns out the guy who owns it was a client of mine from 2005 - small world. Anyhow, we messed around with the settings on the old Kenwood DNX-8120. We deleted all of the previous phones that had been paired, but still couldn't get the new Galaxy S9+ to pair up. (Later, after restarting the phone on my way home, I did get it to pair, but it kept dropping and then would only pair as a telephone and not media device, so assume the phone isn't pairing correctly with the old head unit). The radio never has been able to receive stations worth a damn. So, the only way to play music in the car now is with a CD, of which I own about 3 (Elvis, Kid Rock and "Party Anthems of the '90's").

Next, we looked at the current setup in the floor of the frunk. It has a 5-channel Alpine amp and then 4 Focal crossovers. There is no subwoofer in the car. The car has very mediocre sound and very weak bass. He said that he really couldn't tell how the speakers were wired up - he said it is possible that there was a subwoofer in the car and it was removed since it is a 5 channel amp. He also said that 4 of the channels could have been used to run the 4 speakers in the front of the car (2 in dash and 2 in doors) and then the 2 rear seat speakers could have been run on the 5th channel. He said he would be able to tell once he started disconnecting wires.

He recommended swapping out the head unit with this one:

which is a Kenwood DMX7704S. It has no DVD/CD drive (which I don't care about). Uses Android Auto/Apple CarPlay instead of having a Garmin navigation unit. He said he would install that unit and then try to tune the system to optimize the sound. Then, he said, after optimizing, if I still wanted better bass, he recommended a small powered subwoofer that would sit in the rear window - a flat sub that wouldn't stick up above the seatbacks to block the rear view out. Here is the unit, a Rockford Fosgate PS-8:

All in, with a new head unit and the subwoofer, installation, tuning, etc., I would be looking at $900. I told him let's just move ahead with both the head unit and the powered subwoofer. So, the car goes in on April 17th for the install. I think it will be $900 well spent.

One other thing, he said that the new head unit will support 2 camera inputs. I already have a backup camera installed and he recommended adding a front view camera on the front spoiler so that I can see how close I am to the curb/parking blocks when pulling into a spot. He said that would be cheap & easy to add, maybe $125, so I'm having that done also. I could alternatively use the input for a dash cam, but I think I'd get more use out of the curb-viewing camera.

BTW, he estimated that whoever did the original setup, with the Passport built-in laser/radar detector plus an active laser jammer, plus the stereo system, that they probably spent over $10,000.

My guess is the 5 channel Alpine amp configured something like this...

Channel 1-2 - Front L+R Dash Speakers
Channel 3-4 - Rear L+R Speakers
Channel 5 mono bass output - L+R door low frequency drivers

The four Focal crossovers are intended to filter out lower bass output (<100Hz?) to the Front Dash and Rear Speakers. Those small dash & rear speakers are really not designed to handle a lot of bass.

Oh boy, down the stereophonic rabbit hole you go! KCA, that same unit is $338 on Amazon. My S8+ won't pair with my old Kenwood in my turbro either. I just did this weeks ago with receivers, and got so confused that I've bought nothing yet. I also looked at some of the Pioneer units. The problem is that when you start looking at specific features of various units, it turns into a head-spinning situation. And according to some reviews that I read (user reviews on Amazon, and tech reviews by 'pros'), some are seemingly more friendly with iPhones than Android. I'd also like to hide a small ssd hard drive of at least 1TB to access music and videos through the usb port. I'm not into booming bass, so I found an OEM Porsche Bose bass unit in Savannah Beige on Craigslist that goes behind the rear seat backs. (As an aside, I had to drive to Los Angeles to get it, and it turned out to be forum member "TechWeenie" that was selling it.) It has two small bass drivers that I'll eventually replace, but it has made a significant improvement to sound quality without altering the appearance of the interior.

Please share your final purchase decision and why you made it.

Well, the $900 out the door didn't seem too bad to me given the new head unit and powered subwoofer, plus his time in deciphering the current setup and reconfiguring it to the new setup. Plus, "tuning" the system (whatever that entails). He quoted me $478 for the head unit (Crutchfield has it for $399) and $299 for the powered sub (Crutchfield has it for the same $299). So, that was paying him basically $200 more that what I'd pay at Crutchfield for his time in installing and tweaking. Plus, he's next door to the auto museum (always good to embrace the local auto enthusiast community) and a former client of my law firm.

I was having second thoughts about it, but then I drove the 928 over the weekend. The sound system in the 928 puts the sound in the 996tt to shame, and the 928's stereo is a single DIN aftermarket unit from probably 2005 or older. No subwoofer. So, there's definitely something "wrong" with the sound in the 996tt, in addition to the wonky connection with the S9+. Plus, upgrading to Android Auto. It's worth the $900 to me to give it a shot. That, and I guess I'm channeling my inner JohnnyIrish in being willing to foregoing some DIY savings to let somebody else hassle with it.

Welcome to the Outpost man! Sounds like you made a great upgrade. Would love to see some pictures of the new system. Post'm here as an attachment. Regarding the old stuff... is a the MOST based Porsche head unit like the CDR-23 or PCM Navigation unit?

Thank you kind sir, both units did not navigation, even if they did, I would still yank them out for a Bluetooth device.
