I really need to start printing in ABS - acetone vapor finishing would make the stuff look so much better...

I did some prosthetic works during a college internship. I made a bunch of cheapo acetone bath rigs because the department head blew the budget on a bunch of stratasys printers. The best results I had were from a used rice cooker I bought at goodwill for $4. You need to be careful with dwell times. If you have small features, they turn into blobs and disappear. Also keep in mind vapor acetone is flammable, so stick to e-cigs.

Also, keep your expectations really low. That is a perfect case study part you have pictured.

Meh. If you look at that example, the "finished" model has lost the detail of the mouth that is on both the raw prints.

I think it can work well for some things, but it pretty much sucks for anything with fine detail or that should have sharp/crisp edges.

From what I've seen there appears to be an art to it as well. Not enough and you still see the lines. Too much and it looks like something Pee Pee Eye would leave in the yard.

Playing with how to model something a bit more complex than Lego base plates for my son. Thoughts so far?

Which software are you using? You can design with LegoCAD and print whatever - is that what you're using, or are you using some other CAD?

Been playing with TinkerCAD. Still way more advanced than I am ;)

For the few Lego things I've done I simply grabbed a zip of STLs for most of the existing Lego parts, import the one I want, and then modify.

I also whipped up a carrier for my USB charger so it would hang between my nightstand and the wall and give me back a bunch of space. My measurements were off/didn't account for shrinkage and the library didn't add supports so it works, but isn't as nice as I envisioned.

This weekend I came up with an idea to build modular "garages" for my son's hotwheels that could be hung on the wall. The idea being that you would assemble them in a grid and hang it up. A single unit turned out much bigger than I expected and when I ran it through Cura it estimated 1.5 days due to all the support material. That also meant a lot of post processing so I've given up on that idea.

Then last night I started playing with the new "code" interface for TinkerCAD and started whipping up a model of every 996 owner's favorite car part...

After finally getting the recall done on the P!g, getting the resulting check, and finding that Porsche has upped the price of the wheels I wanted by over $1k since I last looked, I think I've about decided on the Ultimaker. Finally playing with Cura and Slic3r as well as the advice of a modeler I've been following (he uses a UM and swears by it) is what is getting me in that direction. Prusa does have configs for Cura, but without the printers to actually play with it just feels like it works better for the UM printers than Prusa's.

I still can't justify the price though, I keep trying to convince myself to say "fuck it" and go for the 5S, and I over analyze sending that much money...

Speaking of the modeler I'm following. Looks like the new Red Lion is pretty much done and he is starting on Green. Maybe I'll actually have a printer by the time all 5 are done...

Few more hours this afternoon while I waited on the slowest and most annoying process ever and the bearing itself is done*. Next up is to do the shaft, it's nut, and finally the flange.

By "done" I mean conceptually speaking. I haven't sliced or tried to print it yet. In theory it should spin freely, but as this is my first complex design I'm not holding my breath...

You should create a kit and sell them as a budget alternative to the LNE stuff.

Pretty sure the final model will include "if you install this in a real car you are a fucking moron (or an asshole from Texas)" embedded in it somewhere.
