Crappy video:

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

Like most things, spending a tiny bit of money up front is usually sufficient to scare you away; spending just enough money up front is usually enough to set the hook.

The hook is set; my 48v, 15ah lithium battery pack is in the mail. I'm about $400 further in the hole, but my electric-only range will increase from 2-5 miles to 20-50 miles depending on my madness with the throttle. The bike has been REALLY handy to have at the office - I've been using it to shoot back and forth between our current location and the new site being built out, but it's going to be much more useful with the bigger battery.

The new battery and rack weigh in at 22 lbs, significantly less than the 48-volt 4-cell sealed lead acid pack it will replace.

I do want to build my own lithium batteries; buying one and replicating it should be less fire-y than trial and error.

Given the location of the batteries in relation to other umm ... critical ... parts, is that something you REALLY want to screw with?

I currently have a hole in my left thumb because the meat that once filled the hole was cauterized when 18,000 volts shot out of my hand. That shit hurts, even for a split second. You think people jump around when they get hit with a 9V taser? Plug yourself into the grid through a 1.8kv neon sign transformer...I can still taste my fillings.

Appealing to my cautious side is a noble gesture, but that wind you're shouting caution into is, unfortunately, the very same one I'm three sheets to.

I've already picked the microwave oven from which I'll harvest the magnetron to make a spot welder...you know, because it would be unsafe to solder a lithium 18650 cell.

My arm hurt for hours after my attempt to make it fluoresce. That sucked, don't recommend it.

I'm always careful around transformers as even small ones can kick the shit out of you. House wiring I rarely even bother to turn the light switch off much less the breaker, but transformers scare the shit out of me.

Had a small one bite me that otherwise would have been nothing, but I was sitting on the floor and the spark decided my balls were the easier path to ground than my ass was. I got kicked in the nuts enough in school to be well versed in that feeling, I'd rather have all those kids line up and kick me in succession than take another bite like that!

WAAAAY back in the day, even before my shitty 2-node Fidonet BBS, I worked for my parents' engineering business. We always had Tektronix 4xxx-series terminals and the similar hardware of the era. One of the companion devices was always a plotter of some sort; for a while, we had an architectural-size multi-pen Calcomp plotter. It was the size of a wall - probably 10 feet wide, 8 feet high, and about 4 feet thick, all built around the giant-ass 2-axis print assembly that had some huge number of pens and other accessories. The frame was a ton or more, easily; the moving assembly/gantry was...30 pounds? So it was also equipped with these massive aircraft actuator stepper motors and the coffee-can-sized capacitors you need to jerk something that weighs as much as a small child back and forth about as fast as you can focus.

It was during the VERY initial dicking around stage when I grounded one of those caps out and vaporized about an inch of screwdriver. Scared the crap out of me. I don't mind high voltage, but I'll pass on the high current.

Yeah caps are fun. I "accidentally" got a classmate good with 3 I wired in series to the on/off switch of the project

In addition to zapping the shit out of him it also caught the project on fire due to it overloading the 80s circuit board which of course made the whole thing doubleplusfunny

That you have to use some serious caps is what has kept me from building a rail gun...

You guys are both Doc Browns! The last few posts had me laughing so hard I bout pissed myself. Be careful with the electrical stuff...never mind...too late.
