It is coming. Blade Runner 2049 used that idea ^^.

Once AI gets there, I think autonomous drones will be a part of the police kit. They can surveil, pursue, and most likely engage the suspect via non lethal means.

It seems like tethered drones would make a lot of sense for some law enforcement applications like the mobile command unit we have in our city. A stripped-down drone that can hoist a decent camera and 200 feet of tether > a 25' telescoping camera mast in the middle of your van. Integrate the drone and tether controls, and I bet you could operate it as easily as you can control any remote CCTV camera with up/down/pan/zoom controls...

Even if you only have one drone-equipped car per shift, that's GOTTA be cheaper than the helo-sharing agreement our PD has (we're way too podunk to have a chopper of our own)...
Remember the Police here with their $15,000 drone/toy that couldn't find the kid in the cornfield...?

There is a mistaken belief that technology can fix stupidity. In most cases, technology exacerbates stupidity...

I operate under the belief that technology makes people dumber.

Take for example that a manual transmission is now a car theft deterrent in many areas.

Or the people that can't get to/from work without their nav system telling them how.

People that believe that their TPMS is going to tell them when their tires need air.

Two people alone in a room that will text one another rather than talking.

All PHP programmers.

The list goes on and on. Technology in the hands of smart people can do great things, but too often technology brings things into the reach of people that have no business performing the given task.

That's where 2A comes in. John Connor with AK will save you from getting nailed by Skynet drone.
