I know this thread is dead right now but every time I see one of these I feel like it should get wide body fenders 9 inch wide tires and wheels in the front 10.5 inch wide tires and wheels in the back and a Fiat Abarth engine and transmission swap......I have this pipe dream that doing those changes with a proper tune and turbo upgrade would make that car the under dog of the century with corner grip on par with cars that far out class it....hell now that I think about it......Maybe use the 2.0 liter 20V Turbo engine and trans from a Fiat Coupe, 220hp without modification would be a blast, and with minor tunes pushing it to 300hp would make that car a giant killer. I bet the curb weight would only go up to about 2,200lbs and with all that tire and all that power that thing would level cars around a road course.....lol

A guy on a Mercedes list that I’m on has a set of Campagnolo alloys for a X1/9. Are these anything that you would want, and if not are they of any value or just recycling?? If you may want them I can connect you two. No idea where he lives unfortunately.

Well, with the new found storage space at my buddy’s place plus the new KC Auto Museum storage facility, I’ve got space to store the X1/9. So, I’m going to keep it. It’s a neat little car. Next step - seriously considering a color change from this:

I got an estimate today for a color change paint job, but it was way too high. Just looking for a driver quality paint job, not the automotive equivalent of the Mona Lisa. What would you guys consider a fair price?

Look into a wrap. It's usually cheaper, can come out just as good, and is reversible when the wife recognizes the shell game and makes you divest

Ha, very true! I actually thought of that and may go that way if I can’t get a decent price on the color change. I’m thinking around $4,500 for the color change, and assuming about $2,500 for a wrap. At that price difference, I would rather do the color change because it needs a new paint job anyway. The current paint job is substandard, plus I hate not being able to polish or really even rub the finish.

Unfortunately, the first quote I got for the color change was $7,500, so that’s a non-starter. I am going to try another shop - one that the tuner kids use and rave about. I may even get a quote from Maaco as I’m not repainting a Duesenberg here.

I know it's a tiny car, but $7500 seems way cheap for a color change. For that price they have to be just taping over trim and hardware and probably not doing much to correct the underlying paint.

LOVE the color. DO IT. That is very close to what I want to do with the Turbo albeit a wrap.

Paint jobs prices are all over the place and varies greatly based on location. I would inquire in some smaller areas around you- Columbia, Wichita, Omaha, Lawrence, Springfield etc. It is worth the drive to save a few grand IMO.

Also, if you can do some prep work, meaning removing bumpers, door panels, trim, etc, that can really help lower the price. Put the child laborers to work ;0

Regarding wrap, my understanding is the paint needs to be in good shape in order to do a wrap. Poor paint or clear coat won't work as I understand. Not to mention wraps seem to be equal or more than paint.

I have gotten a 2-coat paint job for 2500 before for a large SUV. Not a color change but it was a nice paint job, that was 2 years ago. This was an outlier and I would expect between 2500-5k for a nice 2-stage. Don't get a single.
