Wow, your head unit is even shittier than my 996's $75 refurbished JVC from Crutchfield. That takes some doing.

I'm sure the Reader's Digest font size will come in handy later in life.

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

I was WAY too cheap to get one with programmable text color. The bright blue text on the JVC goes really nicely with the orange 70's LCD segments everywhere else in the cabin.

Stuff I gotta fix:

According to the Missouri safety inspection kid, the exhaust headers have an exhaust leak and the car is running rich.
Need to swap out new roof holder clips in the trunk - this will require drilling out rivets on one of the clips.
Passenger side exterior door handle will not open the door.
Get passenger side ABS "Porsche" rocker panel cover lined up and install.
Either refinish current ATS wheels or replace them with EMPI Fuchs replicas.
Speedometer cable must have worked loose when I was installing stereo a couple of weeks ago.
Adjust passenger side headlight.

I ordered 2 blue plaid seat inserts from 914rubber.com. The current inserts are mismatched and have some small cracks and tears. Hopefully they aren’t too hard to replace. The 1975 model offered plaid inserts as an option, as did the 1976 models.

Those seats look totally awesome.
I had an '82 Scirocco that had blue plaid seats and door panels. That is still one of my favorite combinations. It works, especally in Porsches.

Yeah, it's funny how some stuff works and other stuff doesn't, even with small differences. For example, Pasha seat inserts on a '78 928 look awesome, but I think would look stupid on a 914. OTOH, plaid inserts in the a 914 look great, but would look stupid on a 928. Agree that plaid inserts in almost any sporting VW just look right - the GTI comes to mind.

My buddy got a brand-new '82 Scirocco for high school graduation. That thing was sweet. Unfortunately, he was smart enough never to let any other the rest of drive it.

Today I had a few minutes to kill late morning, so I thought I’d try to tackle a few nagging issues.

First up, the “Dominic Toretta” shift light mounted on top of the dash. The power cord disappeared through a seam on the back of the instrument binnacle, and I couldn’t find where it went from underneath the dash. Good thing about the 914 is that the instruments just pull out individually. I pop out the speedo and spot the power cord right away. Bye, bye, Dom!

Next, the steering wheel is about 20 degrees to the right with the wheels pointed straight ahead. Aftermarket steering wheel and hub. Not sure what I’m gonna find behind that horn button. But, thankfully, there’s a standard washer and a 27 mm nut, with a hub with plenty of splines. I move it to the left a few teeth, and voila, problem solved.

Third, I notice that when I put the right turn signal on, the dash indicator lights for the first flash, then stays off. It is the same indicator for both left and right, and it works as it should for the left turn signal. I check, and sure enough, the right front turn signal no worky. Bulb looks perfect. I break out the 928 owner’s best friend (Deoxit), hit the socket with a shot and adjust the contacts. Bam, three for three and I’m a total of 30 minutes in.

Last project - fog lights. Neither side works. I pull the passenger side lens and see the bulb is good. Deoxit and reinsert, but no light. Circuit tester shows no power to the fog light housing. Before I can check the fuse box, I check the time and see that kickoff just happened. I can work on the car later, but I ain’t missing Mahomes Magic.

I just ordered a Christmas present for myself (I'll have one of my sons give it to me): a new steering wheel for the 914. It is a Viilante brand, Modena 350 with black spokes, black perforated leather rim and black stitching. As the name implies, it is a 350 mm (13.75") diameter rim. It has a 39 mm offset (so about a 1.5" dish).

My current wheel is aftermarket, so I don't have to buy a hub for the new wheel. It is is basically flat (no offset or dish), so my fingers often hit the wiper stalk when cornering. Also, the current one's design is a bit too modern - looks like something out of a 2000 model year car. It's also got some rust where the brand name ("Dino") is engraved in the lower spoke. Bottom line, I think upgrading is justified.

The one I ordered is more classic. To add some bling, I plan to do gnat's deviated stitching trick with some blue thread to match the exterior. Plus I bought some 1" wide gaffer's tape in light blue to add a center stripe to the top of the wheel. I can remove either of those mods if they look goofy. Ebay price with free shipping was $160 for this brand new wheel. Not bad.

For those of you looking to replace a steering wheel, most aftermarket companies (Momo, NRG, Viilante, Renown) are using the Momo pattern of 6x70mm. To be honest, after shopping around, I think the best offerings are from Viilante & Renown - lots of variations in rim materials and stitching and designs, good websites and reasonably priced. Renown only sells from its website. Viilante has some models that you can only buy on its website, but it has a bunch of steering wheels listed on ebay, and at a nice discount. Here are some pics from their website:

Sounds like a good job on the 914.

+2 on the Mahomes Magic! They had me worried for a while. Son in law from KC, MO assured me that they were fine. He was right.
