Ha, close enough. They shaved the turn signal fins off the front fenders. Really difficult to reverse because the front fenders are welded on.

Seriously the car doesn't look all that bad with that modification. Kinda like a slope nose 914.

If you didn't have any clue what a 914 is, yeah maybe. If you have even a passing awareness of the 914, however, you just know something is terribly wrong even if you can't identify it.

Like you, I knew something was wrong but I couldn't explain it until I pulled up pics of other '74 914s.

It does make you wonder why, though. Did someone hairlip the front in at some time in the past?

I think it was just a way to customize, kind of like the slantnose 911 conversions. When I first started looking seriously for a Porsche back in 2002, it was really common to see lots of highly modified 911s - the Strosek kits were all the rage. Now, you hardly ever see people making major body changes to their cars. But, back in 2002, you could buy decent 911 coupes for $15,000 all day long. I think back in the '70's and '80's, people looked at Porsches the same way they did VW beetles - a fun little car to play with and customize. In a way. I kind of miss seeing the customization as I think it does make them interesting. But, I'm not going to pay $20,000 for a car that makes me want to spend another $10,000 to "fix" it every time I look at it.

Hmm, the article says a ‘76 914 is worth between $36k and $50k. Not sure I’ve seen a ‘76 listed anywhere close to $36k,much less $50k.

I saw that price point an about spit up. Well it is Forbes after all and they must think anyone looking for a classic Porsche is loaded. Maybe after a complete restoration from the ground up with all new old stock parts applied...?

This may be based on restorations. Per my earlier post I've hung out with some of the local 914 knuckleheads, and the prices some of them have paid to have (admittedly gorgeous,) examples of these weird little cars made my eyes bug out.

The shaved fenders are the killer for me. I could swap out the wheels.

I keep seeing conflicting info on the carb conversion - on the one hand you have people saying it makes them more reliable. On the on the other hand, I hear that you need to install a different cam to run carbs, but most conversions were done to save repair bills and never had the cams changed. So, I'm not sure where I stand on a FI vs carburetor car.

There are no clear answers on the carb issue, but I'm only interested in cars with original FI. The interior of that car is a mess!
