Dammit, My Clutch Went Out!!

1987 951. 109k miles. Decent condition. Was my son's first car back in 2011. He has moved on, so mostly it sits. Decided to take it to the local PCA autocross next weekend. Looking at my records, I see it's been 6 1/2 years since the timing belt's been done. Take it to my indy mechanic, who is excellent, for TB/WP, which is going to be around $2k. He calls me today to tell me the clutch is slipping badly at high rpm. Quotes me another $3k for that. Ugh.

I picked up the car this morning from the shop. The clutch isn't as bad as I thought it would be. Basically, it is going bad. It slips in 3rd, 4th & 5th gear above half throttle. I had not driven the car above 30 mph in probably a year or more, so I drove it home from the shop. Frankly, I think we could have driven it at the autocross this weekend (although they just cancelled the autocross) because the course our PCA uses is pretty tight - not sure I ever got out of 2nd gear with my 996TT.
Anyhow, I'm planning to order the part myself and possibly give installation a shot myself. I'm looking at the Sachs clutch kit, KF24801. That looks like the OEM clutch. We're keeping this car basically stock, so I don't see any reason to use another.
Thoughts on a DIY clutch replacement? I did my own WP/TB on the 928. In relation to that job, tougher or easier?

Also, my indy gave me a list of other stuff that needs to be done. Fortunately, it ain't that long:
-Motor mounts: looks like I can DIY those, although way harder than the 996 to do. The biggest problem is the cost. The Porsche OE mounts apparently are the only decent ones available, and they are $220 per side (so $440 total) even with the warehouse33auto.com promo code (996outpost). The unanimous opinion is that the aftermarket ones are all crap (although sooo much cheaper at about $50 to $80 for a pair). I replaced these motor mounts 26,000 miles ago with the aftermarket units and my indy says they are toast, so I guess I'll spring for the OE Porsche ones. Supposedly they are good for 20 years.
-Fuel lines: This was on my list to "get around" to doing due to the danger of a fire from a ruptured line. Thankfully, a set of aftermarket, upgraded hoses are only a little over $100.
-Leaking seals: he replaced a couple of seals that were leaking the worst, but there are still some leaks. Not sure how high of a priority this will be given the rest of the "to do" list. I can live with a couple of oil leaks. Also, I notice on almost every DIY thread anywhere on the internet that the patient car seems to have oil leaks. It isn't as bad as my 964 was, but I suspect it is the nature of the 944 beast to have an oil leak somewhere.

Not on my indy's list, but on my own, is that I need to have a dent and scratch removed from the hood.
Also need to repaint the rear bumper and panel just above it as the paint is the original single-stage paint. The rest of the car has been resprayed, so it's noticeable since the single-stage paint tends to fade.
The driver's seat has some torn seams, so need to get the seat bottom replaced.
Seat bottom electric adjustment switch is wonky. No surprise there as I already replaced all of the seat adjustment switches on my same-year 928.
The turn signal relay is apparently out.
Needs floormats badly. I hear a nice set of Lloyd's mats with red lettering and trim screaming to be placed on my Father's Day gift list.
Rear tires are about done.
Need to refresh the stereo. Had a pretty decent aftermarket system put in back in 2011 when we first got it, but the system hasn't fared well (high school/college abuse likely the culprit).
As this thread is turning into a maintenance log for the car, I may create a Maintenance Log subforum and move this thread over there.
Still open for thoughts and comments and tips.
Once I get this stuff done, the car will be in pretty good condition. It still looks nice and runs decently, although it is definitely a "driver" quality car. However, since its days of abuse in the hands of a high school/college student driver are now over, I think it is appropriate to get it sorted out.

I changed the motor mounts on my 924S a few weeks ago and should be the same ones as your 951. The cheapest I could find them was from Sonnen Porsche at $190.08 each. Installation wasn’t difficult, but not quick. Definitely easier than the AOS I just finished up on the 996.

I used Clarks’s Garage website for install directions. www.clarks-garage.com

Aw crap, you're right - they are cheaper from Sonnen. But, I already ordered from Warehouse33auto.com. Ended up being $440 from Warehouse33 with free shipping (that was the best price I found, but didn't think to check Sonnen). With shipping Sonnen was a little over $400, so I could have saved $40. Oh well, I rarely (if ever) regret buying from Jason as the service is so good. I think Jason was a little higher because this is a genuine Porsche part - he has mentioned that it is tough for him to get great prices on genuine Porsche parts, although with the 996outpost promo code, he was cheaper than everyone else I saw when I checked around.

I completely agree. I order 95% of the time from Warehouse 33 and always have my stuff within two days.

The 951 is deep into the clutch job now. I also bought some braided fuel lines from Lart's to do their fuel line conversion/upgrade. And, the aforementioned motor mounts. I'm actually using the shop next door to the auto museum for this work. Normally, I'd have my Porsche indy do the work, but the shop next door really goes out of its way to support the museum, plus it is next door, and my indy is across town. The clutch began slipping so badly that I think I would have had to have towed it to him.
Anyhow, here are a couple of pics with the transaxle and torque tube removed:

KC -

If you could post up some pics and whatnot when you do the fuel lines, I'd greatly appreciate it. Fuel lines are on my list for Der HooptieWagen, though they're fairly far down after a buttload of other stuff that'll need to be addressed before there's any risk of ignition, much less fire.

I think you just scared me into never buying a 951.

Turn signal relay might actually be entire switch in column. They go bad in these cars more often than not.
