Learned to drive stick on my fathers 99 c2 cab when I was 16. 35 now and I’ve I’ve owned 7 Porsches. A 964c2, 993c2s, 997c2s cab, 997.1gt3, 997.2gt3, 991gts and now
‘00 996 Slicktop Aerokit

Didn’t realize the car was basalt black when I bought. HUGE Bonus. My dads 996 I learned to drive on was basalt. As My buddy said “only you buy a car and don’t know the color”
After some drives. Feels solid. No rattles. Suspension feels surprisingly smooth and working decent for its age...it’s just way too soft. It oversteers quick...way quicker than my 993 or any other Carrera I’ve owned (7 of them). Tires are some ****e conti dsw so part of the reason.
Very hard to beat for the money. In terms of fun.
Much harder to drive fast like this. The steering is much better than the last 997 Carrera S I drove. Not as good as my 993. But with fresh tires and coilovers I think that will improve. It feels LIGHT as hell. Power is super smooth. Feels quite a bit faster than my 993, more than the 282 vs 296 stated horsepower figures.


Needed some input.
Ordered KWv3 & FD Motorsport Exhaust. Putting on some fresh MIchelin Ps4s.
Anything else easy while at the shop. Someone mentioned motor mounts cause can see exhaust sagging. Then had me reading on transmission mounts. Then the world of how much vibration each causes. Just replace with oem or is there now a go to for each?
Aware of ims choices. Wasn’t sure if the car has the single row or dual row or how I can find out. Thought there was some crossover in the 2000 year.

Motor mounts are cheap and easy. Yeah, your look a bit saggy, not real bad though.

No way to know for sure what bearing you have, but some years have much higher percentage of one type than other years.

Coil packs too. They always crap out eventually, so swap em out (and plugs) if you don't know when last replaced.

How long have you had the car? Miles? History info/records?

Motor mounts: I went with OEM mounts and couldn't be happier. They tightened and smoothed out the car. With your reading you must know all the ends and outs for the various types and the impact on NVH. Depends on what you want to use the car for, I guess.

Your description of how it handles is definitely not right. If the tires are old, however, that could be a big part. Even without PSM these cars are much less tail happy than the air cooled cars.

Thanks. I don’t like new cars so much. Didn’t just go 991 to 996. Also had a 993 and 964 in between and many others. Rather drive a 964 or 993 than a 991.

Just got the car. 81k miles. 2 owner car. Maintained by owner, family member was a Porsche mechanic. So no shop records really. Car has all original paperwork, window sticker, Booklets, radio code paper etc.

I like it though. Fun. Rather have a fun playful car. But yeah my 993 and 964 were setup etc. I’m sure with fresh tires and KW it will be a new car.

If you aren't sure which bearing you have, just intervene now and put in either the Solution or the dual row LN retrofit, get it it behind you. If you like to drive aggressively, the deeper sump and oil pan baffles couldn't hurt. If you are going to track the car, then the Solution would be worth it. If you are just going to drive it hard but not track hard, the Retrofit should be fine. Porsche cloned (copied?) the LN dual row Retrofit for their own replacement version in 2017. If the original (less robust) design is still out their working in a majority of all the cars made, the much superior Retrofit should have an even better life cycle.

Nicely optioned car - someone knew what they were doing when they spec'd it.

Hmm, 81k on the current IMS bearing. If it was gonna let go, it probably would've done so by now. '00 model year, so there's a good likelihood it's a dual row. I'd probably wait to do the IMS bearing on the next clutch change (or the next time you drop the engine or tranny).

Just go OEM on the motor mounts. Easy to swap out yourself. Here is a link to the part on a good vendor's website (small company with great prices & great customer service - owned by a guy who owns a 996), $240 for the pair:
