I was in the right front seat (4 seater aircraft - 2 pilots in front, a weapons system operator and mission commander in back). Guy in the front left seat (callsign "Whale") is on the controls for landing. We're on short final, having already "called the ball" at 3/4 mile, so literally a few seconds from landing (controlled crash?) on the carrier. Mission commander (callsign "Troll") in the back calls over the intercom "Concentrate, Whale." Whale turns around about 135 degrees in his seat, points straight at the mission commander and coolly says "Troll, you shut up." Turns around and lands the plane maybe 3 seconds later. Maybe one of the funniest, yet at the same time, most terrifying, moments of my life.
Sounds like Whale knew what he was doing and Troll should have kept his mouth shut.

In my business life I knew an ex-Navy pilot named Tex Houston, who btw lives/lived in the KC area. From listening to him these types of stories are way too typical to not be accurate! He used the "controlled crash" term frequently. Before he became a pilot his job was to move the planes around on the deck. He damaged two planes and his commanding officer told him: "If you damage one more plane North Korea is going to declare you an Ace!" He had soooo many stories...

That's a funny quote about being a North Korean ace.

Another quick one regarding callsigns. There are no "Mavericks" or "Vipers" or other cool callsigns, at least in the Navy. You got a callsign by doing something stupid or embarassing, or often both. I had a friend with the callsign "Baja", which sounds kind of cool. He got it because he accidentally flew his F-14 into Mexican airspace (which isn't all that hard to do in San Diego, but the Mexicans still don't like it very much).

Anyhow, Troll got his callsign because he was short and hairy and kind of looked like a troll . . . and so did his wife. The "so did his wife" part was always added in, no matter if it was said in Troll's presence, or if it was Troll himself explaining how he got that callsign. Twenty-something year old Navy flyers, at least back in the day, were not particularly politically correct.

So just what "exactly" does Mexico do about an F14 in their air space? Complain? I am surprised they even knew it happened. An F14 for GOD's sake! I've seen some of the stuff that plane could do and sure I haven't seen the half of what it was capable of doing.

The Mexican Air Force scrambles its entire standby force (trike buggies alpha through delta) to intercept, of course.

Here's some footage from the most recent Mexican Air Force show...

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

Gone hunting with Alec Baldwin and Dick Cheney. Back soon.
