I spent the day working on the 944 Turbo. It just had several little projects to do. The main one was addressing the stereo. When we got it back in 2011, it was my son’s first car. So, we spent some $$ on the stereo. Subwoofer amp installed in the spare tire well and main amp strapped under the glove box in the passenger footwell. That system is old and not functioning, plus I scrapped the 12” subwoofer a couple of years ago.

Today, max$wag and I stripped out the old amps and head unit for an AM/FM/BT media player. Single DIN. Brand new at Walmart for $16.87. Actually sounds decent and it’s all I need.

So, in addition to the new stereo, I gave the car a good detailing, including the engine bay. Then, we drove over to a PCA buddy’s underground parking garage. He’s going to store it there as he recently sold his Boxster and is currently Porscheless. So, of course, he gets driving privileges in the deal. It has now basically been brought to a very nice driver standard. In the past year:
TB/WP
Clutch
Tires
Thermostat
Belts
Armrest console
Front seats
Custom floor mats
BT stereo
Engine mounts
Fuel lines
Fuel filter
Spa time at body shop to fix warts

It’s not a concours level car, but it would look right at home in the museum. I think it is one of the nicest 944s in town.

Now I just have to swap that old Rennlist decal for a 996outpost.com sticker!!

The car does look good!

However, I got to ask...first it was the dog...now the house looks like a used car lot...my guess is the wife put her foot down and the 944 needed a new place to sleep. Am I right?

BTW did you send the Fiero down the road?

Wow, that looks amazing, very nice! I cannot believe that radio is that cheap!

My better half does not like the 944s, she thinks they are ugly. I love them. I debate on which one to get- S, S2, Turbo. Since I have a 996 Turbo, I see the S/S2 as a better option/lower entry price.

My uncle bought a new one back in '83, he drove it back and forth between his warehouse 6 hours away. Lots and lots of highway miles. At around 350K miles, his mechanic examined it closely and said the BEBs looks brand new, a true testament to Porsche. He later bought a new 968 and ended up selling the 944 to a neighbors kid.

Ha, well, she's still not happy about the dog. And, our house has looked like a used car dealership for quite a while now. Actually, it was worse when my older son was in college as his summer "job" was buying a car at the auction, fixing it up, then flipping it. He'd have 2 or 3 cars in "inventory" at a time. When it got real bad, we'd park the extras over in the back of the law firm/museum parking lot.

The move of the 944 Turbo to the buddy's place was for 2 reasons. First, he offered because he had a spare space he wasn't using and it is fantastic storage - clean, dry, temperature controlled and huge parking spaces. Second, he got rid of his Porsche out of necessity, and this gives him a chance to still have a play toy. I expect to see it every Saturday morning at our local PCA breakfast. (speaking of which - you still need to get down here!) I'm happy to see him get some joy out of it rather than just having it sit around.

And, yes, I've still got the X1/9 - it's sitting on the lift above the E30. BaT thwarted my first attempt at getting rid of it last fall when it rejected my auction application. Then, Covid-19 has made it tough to sell a car the traditional way. In the end, I might just keep it. Ultimately, in about 3 or 4 years, I'm going to have room to keep around 14 or 15 classic cars, and an X1/9 definitely has a spot on the wish list. I just wasn't ready to buy one yet last year because lack of storage space. However, that situation has changed with the buddy's spot opened up, then there is another place I'll be able to keep cars that opens up to me at the end of May. So, I'm not sure it makes sense to sell the X1/9 now only to hunt down another one in a couple of years. I like the car - it is a fun little go-kart and they are really getting rare. If you actually go looking for one, there aren't many for sale nationwide. They made about 170,000 of them, but I'll bet not very many are left in driving condition.

Not only is the stereo crazy cheap, it is only about 2 inches deep. I could see putting a double DIN unit in there and in the 928 both. They have the double DIN units with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for about $150, and they are also very shallow. So, I think they would fit pretty easily. I have no need for a CD player anymore. The design isn't bad looking. Although I'd prefer a name brand, this price point makes you look at the entire proposition differently. If I don't like the stereo or some new technology comes along, I'm not going to lose any sleep replacing it at $16.87.

As for the 944 design, I think they hit a home run with it. The 924, not so much, but the 944, even the early ones, still look incredible to me. Polishing the front wheel fender flares is almost a sexual experience.

I don't know the market well enough to know the price difference between an S, an S2 and a Turbo. I think there are still a lot of Turbos on the market. Total production numbers show that there were nearly as many Turbos produced as there were S and S2 combined, so I suspect the price differential isn't too bad. In fact, given that the S2 was almost as powerful as the Turbo, without looking, I'll bet that an S2 might be more expensive than a Turbo.

As for reliability, my son daily drove that one for 5 years. Looking through my records yesterday, it has been a very reliable car. I had heard horror stories about maintenance costs, but the vast majority has just been routine maintenance. Repairs on the car have been negligible.

My experience with BAT was similar. They rejected and then when we fixed the info they wanted an absurdly low reserve, 12-15K lower than market. No thanks. I like looking but the odds of me using them is about zero. Friend sold one on there, the winner bailed and BAT did not help out. 2nd up bailed. The only reason he got a sale was because he spent 1.5 hours on a call with the 4th highest bid, they were elated. 3k difference I recall. Point is, BAT does not disclose what actual transactions occur and does not help when buyers start bailing.
