Insurance for the 996

Post by Einsteiger » Mon Apr 12, 2021 9:28 am

I've been using Hagerty since I bought the '99 996 back in 2017. The premium has steadily climbed, as I'm sure most do. But I'd like to shop around for alternatives that offer the agreed-amount policy like Hagerty.

Even the insurance for the daily driver 2013 ML350 and the never-driven '06 Mini Cooper S has climbed to a level with Travelers that I need to shop those, too.

I have a strong hunch that even with a clean driving record, once you turn 70 your premiums start to go UP at a geometric rate. :(

Anyone had luck with the others? [Leland West, etc]

Thanks
Kevin

It seems like you're trying to avoid "big box" insurance co's but we recently did as the commercial says and switched from Allstate to Geico at a savings of about 45%. Allstate kept steadily increasing my premium with no tickets and no accidents and I'm 37. I have all 3 of my cars with the same company.

I understand that it's commonplace for insurance companies to raise rates once they've got you in the fold as they expect you to just accept the increase rather than take on the hassle of switching companies. That being said, I've been happy with car insurance with USAA since 1987 (except for 2 years when I used American Family because of house insurance).

I've seen commercials for it, but have never tried it. Our home/cars are all bundled at State Farm and I don't think I could find any cheaper insurance. www.zebra.com

I've been with Traveler's for years with a clean record for both auto & home. However, if I slide the Porsche over there, you get into the "what's it worth" game if a claim is filed. The "big box" national carriers will total out a 996 for about $3k if they can, whereas with Hagerty, Leland, etc. it's an "agreed amount" policy. You pay for it, but if the car get's totaled, that's what you get.

I knew I was being played when my independent agent for the last 15 years claimed that he was not familiar with "agreed amount" coverage. I used to have insurance licenses....I know he's not being truthful.

Thanks for the feedback.

Update if anyone is remotely curious. I realize that rates differ by state, but today's shopping yielded some numbers for comparison:

Existing policy with Hagerty: $677 for the coming renewal

Same coverages, except $2000 higher insured value, from Leland West: $367 with PCA discount.

I got a DETAILED quote from Leland after submitting a LOT of additional info. While the price went up a little, it was fair for a collector car policy.....however...they have some restrictions on driving the vehicle. No errands, side trips, just to - from car shows and events. Not sure how they would enforce this, but after reading the entire policy which they kindly provided, I elected to pass. I want to drive the 996 whenever and wherever I want.

Not exactly a wild goose chase, but at least now I know what else is out there.

They don't directly, but you end up SOL if something happens outside their restrictions. Effectively speaking you simply have no insurance for any other use.
