So being kind of a completist, what's my next step? It doesn't seem to have its own fuse, so I'm pretty sure that's not the issue. The switch to turn it on is in the latching system, correct? Do these wear out?

The most likely issue is that the PO disabled the light because it was causing the battery to run down, but what's the hack? Snipping wires?

Try standing in front of the car with the frunk lid open and clapping really hard a couple of times.

Maybe he installed "The Clapper."

I saw a post on that other forum that said if your battery goes dead (and mine did last summer), the dealer has to reset the light using the PIWIS. This is the most likely scenario but I am not that interested in getting this fixed so frunk that. On to other things.

What? I highly doubt that, at least before the 991. These cars are simply not computer heavy enough for that to be plausible.

Our battery has died so many times over its life that it's not funny and not once has it ever been to the dealer for a reset.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. After seeing inside the instrument cluster and how 70's solid-state that thing is, I can't imagine the front trunk light issue could be anything more complicated than a dirty socket, a clipped/grounded wire, a bad bulb, or a corroded plunger switch.

The window and sunroof regulators can be reset without a PIWIS; it seems unlikely you'd need one to reset a light bulb.

Maybe your car has a MOST-bus front trunk light. :D

If you pull the weather stripping up around the top of the frunk on that side, you should be able to move the carpet far enough to look down between the back of the carpet and the frunk wall to see if the wiring is intact.

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

You know that light just pops out of the carpet....right? A long while ago I replaced a lot of the light bulbs with LED bulbs. Pop them into the light socket..easy peasy. But wait, plug it into the socket and it doesn't work. Cheap China crap! Actually, not so. LED bulbs are polarity sensitive. Swap the bulb around in the light socket and it works. I like that bright little LED bulb in the frunk.

And if you have a multimeter, check for 12V and ground on the bulb clips.

Yup - it's a remarkably cheap/shitty assembly for an $80K car...

I did this w/ the Corvette a few years back - the incandescent bulbs under the hood drew enough power to run the battery down in a day or two. With the LEDs, I can be a forgetful POS for a week and still not have to jump-start the 80's time machine.

Just scanned it via the OBD-II port for any codes (there are none!) and emissions readiness (they're all ready)!

Since the stars have aligned, I'm headed over to the smog shop...

I don't have schematics for the NA 996, so these notes are from a Turbo. I believe they should be correct IF your car has electric frunk & engine bay unlocking. If you have the pull handles, I don't know.

The engine bay, glove compartment, and frunk lights are all wired together. When one is on they all are on. They are controlled from the alarm module.
They are on the same fuse as all the other interior lights.

What does this mean?
If any interior lights work the fuse is OK.
If you open the engine bay and the engine bay light comes on check to see if the frunk light is on, too. It should be. If it's not check the wiring to the light bulb.
Latch the engine bay with the lid open (use a screwdriver to close the latch). This makes the alarm think the lid is closed. Now open the frunk and see if the engine bay light is lit. If it's not lit the problem is in the frunk latch switch. Remember to pop the engine bay before you try to close the cover!

If anyone has NA schematics you could send them to me and I'll review them.
