The dreaded oil filler tube

Post by DTMiller » Sun Apr 01, 2018 7:27 am

Mine has a crack and I need to replace it. What parts do I need and anyone have a good set of DIY instructions that doesn't include steps like "remove accessory belt" but instead says, "you'll need to remove the accessory belt. Step one of X in that process is to loosen the farengi bolt using your 12.75 mm socket. Be careful of pitfall Y which you won't realize because you've never done this before."

Thanks!

Also, if you'd like to buy my car and do this yourself let me know, as that's where this is headed.

You too! I seriously want to fix up the little stuff and then post it, maybe on BAT. It's a beautiful car, runs great. I just don't have the inclination to drive it much and I'd like to dump some money into the track car. I'm sure I'll miss it but it doesn't get driven enough to warrant the space and money that is tied up in it. Also, with my luck you guys are destined to see 996 values quintuple in the next 12 months.

Understand. But you'll still miss it. Heck, I've even grown fond of the 928 (Stockholm Syndrome probably).

Hey, with that brood of yours, you need to replace it with a nice, big German luxury sedan. A classy dark blue over dark saddle would be nice. Now, where to find the owner of such a car that would make you a smokin' deal on it . . .

DT, man you need to back away from the computer and take a deeeeep breath. You don't wanna go do something harsh and sell your nice 996 over a little silly oil filler tube. Heck, all you have to do is remove half of the engine to replace that thing, that's all. Oh, and trust me... when you see that thing drive away, you'll miss it. I'm happy to be back in one.

DT......from what I recall when I did mine on the 997....you need to remove the airbox, serp belt, alt and maybe the throttle body...hell I don't remember. One thing I do remember is to be VERY careful to not let a bolt plop down into the hole when the fill tube is removed. If that happened I would sell it.

Some people have been relatively successful with just patching it with a large heat shrink tubing, but of course, the best route is to replace it.
