Collector Car Insurance Companies

Post by 32wildbilly » Sun Apr 29, 2018 5:34 pm

Anybody have experience with any of the Collector Car insurance companies? Like Hagerty, American Collectors, etc? Was reading a post at the "other site" and someone mentioned these as reasonably priced options for low mile usage special vehicles like ours. Did some research and got some quotes. Seems like there are a lot of dissatisfied customers, but the prices are better than my standard insurance company prices.

Hagerty is probably the best known. Full disclosure, they are a sponsor of the museum, but I've not heard any complaints about them.

I used to have a declared value policy on the miata that covered storage, transport and paddock and limited street miles to/from the mechanic. I cancelled it because the car isn't street legal or registered so if it's going anywhere it's on the trailer.

I'm not sure they'd be a good choice for anything daily driven or even driven for enjoyment.

I'm embarrassed to say I average approximately 1000 miles per year, so not a daily driver and for only about 5-6 months per year as I store it during the winter.

I have several of my cars insured through American Collectors. Great rates. Never filed a claim, so no idea how they are at servicing the policies.

I moved to Grundy for agreed value on the 996 @ 50k and the 997 at 70k for 500/year for each. Been good to deal with so far. No mileage limits on the policy what so ever.

I pay a reduced rate with Allstate for the 996 limited to 5,000 miles/year. I think most insurance companies offer similar options.

I looked into it and agree its a better deal for cars like ours that are driven only occasionally. However, I don't qualify because we only have two cars, my wife's DD and the 996 (I commute via public transport). You have to have a car for every driver in the house as well as the 'collector' car.

I've been very happy with Hagerty. Had some damage during shipping and they got right on it, no questions or back peddling. Take lots of detailed pictures though.

I recently got a quote from Hagerty for the 996 for 5k mi per year at $25k agreed value and it was almost a grand. Seemed high to me?
