Road Trip Tips for 996

Post by Brian Minson » Mon Apr 30, 2018 10:05 am

Hey everyone, during the California Festival of Speed I learned about the 996 Outpost! Love what I have seen thus far.

My 2000 996 Carrera 4 Tip is my first water cooled 911. No bones about it, I am an air cooled guy with having nearly a dozen Porsche's over the last twenty years; and my currently baby is my 1967 Coupe.

Looking at taking the 996 2600 miles on a cross country road trip next month, and wanted to know what would you bring with you in case of a breakdown. If I was taking my '67 I would bring belt, points, cap/rotor, extra oil, etc. But is there anything I should bring seeing as this is a M96 motor? IMS, RMS, AOS, all have been updated in the last 4000 miles.

Brian :)

It'll be a nice chance to clear up the injectors and run through a can of seafoam. I do it every few thousand miles. Extra oil for sure, 2 or 3 quarts. Maybe clean the radiators if you have free time leading up to the trip. I did that this year for the first time and it dropped a few degrees off the running temps. Maybe a little coolant in case you pull a 5CHNELL & hit road debris.

Have fun & safe driving

I bought my car in California and drove it home all the way to NJ. Its a great car to take on a road trip this distance, you're going to have a lot of fun.

I would echo the need for spare oil quart or two, I ended up going to an Autozone in New Mexico. I also brought along a AAA emergency roadside kit (reflector, etc.), a first aid kit, and a battery jumper. If the battery dies, your hood may not open (I haven't had this issue yet), so you may consider a battery charger with a plug in to the cigarette lighter.

What we used most was a cooler behind the seats that we could access easily for water and redbull.

I used roadtrippers.com to plan ahead on hotels, restaurants, etc. I found that after we were driving for a while, we could figure out how far we would get before we stopped for lunch and then for the night.

I'm jealous! It's almost a year exactly since I took my trip and I still think about how much fun I had.

For long-distance trips, I pack a radial tire plug kit AND the compact spare. Yes, you'll ruin the tire if you plug it yourself, but when you wind up with a second flat 250 miles from the nearest trailer park, being able to repair punctures anywhere is reassuring. A couple of large trash bags (for wrapping flats to keep the car clean, to lay on if you wind up needing to get under the car, etc.) and a roll of duct tape can be REALLY handy.

Before taking the car on an extended road trip, I'd ensure that the water pump feels like it's in good working order (no play, no leaks = no surprises).

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

Gone hunting with Alec Baldwin and Dick Cheney. Back soon.

2600 miles road trip in a 996?

Make sure a tow truck follows you every step of the way.

Yes, I'm kidding.

For me, my insurance covers road side assistance, but it always helps to have a simple tool kit for minor repairs. Also, if you break down and need a tow, then make sure they know it's a Porsche and not a Toyota. ha! Oh, and if your wheels have the special key lug, don't forget it! Ask me how I know. hahaha

A spare ignition switch and tiny flathead screwdriver tip to swap it out with.

We take the cabriolet on long road trips and best is doing a really comprehensive inspection before you leave.

Besides that we pack a few basics:
Oil
Serpentine belt
Spare bulbs for signals, etc
Basic cleaning supplies and glass cleaner for bugs etc
Basic first aid kit
Fire extinguisher
Good tunes for long boring straight roads and good throaty exhaust for the twisties
Patience for all Prius drivers and for motor home drivers towing Miatas on trailers
Adaptability for a route change when something looks cool

Take the road less traveled and have fun!
