explain please..

On the way to work tonight, no odd noises. Although it is difficult to discern the car from the 100s and soon to be 1000s of Harleys in town right now that are out on the road.

Still waiting for cold start when leaving here in 4 hrs.

In a nutshell, take your car on a 20min+ drive and use the durametric tool to measure each cam shaft position while idling. Porsche allows +/- 6 degrees of cam shaft deviation. (from 0) If your values are near +/- 6, then this would support the theory that the chain pads have worn to the end of their life.

I'll have to look up the Durametric tool and maybe ask around the local PCA guys too.

I did climb under the car today to take another look and I took some pics of the external chain tensioners that are visible. Does anyone notice an issue? Seems something is off.. or at least not what it should be as described in the "101 Projects" book.

The book states that the circles embossed on the block and heads are to match the tensioners.. mine are not matched up. Its my guess that the 2 that are swapped were put back in when the IMS bearing was done and from the pics in the book, those 2 look almost identical, so it shouldn't be an issue... whereas the 3rd tensioner you cant see without removing the AC compressor is a different length.

The oil seep I'm seeing on the drivers side I think is actually coming from the camshaft plugs on the end of the head. When I do the engine out service I'll take care of all that.

I placed a big order with Pelican this morning and for $10.00 got the 2 day shipping..so I'll have it all Friday

Seeing as you're not the average DIYer, I would recommend investing in the enthusiast kit. This has far more use than a code reader could ever provide.

Where are you located? Several of us have Durametrics; I don't anticipate needing the other two VINs for mine.

If you don't want to buy one and don't mind waiting a few days, I'm also happy to ship mine to you...

yup DBJoe that's exactly what I was referring to.

Seems that this very high end indy shop in TX reinstalled the tensioners in the wrong holes? Maybe they are identical, just marked differently? That was 15k miles ago, and it runs fine other than the startup noise, which is a lot less since the Lubri-Moly I put in the oil.

I'll know for sure tomorrow on the sizes when I get the 3 new ones.

Thursday afternoon when I woke up there was a very expensive box from Pelican on the counter. Unfortunately I picked up an extra night to help a guy out soooo.... after working 55 hrs this week by the time I get off in 2 more hrs.. I'll be digging in to the 996.

Oil and filter change
4 new oxygen sensors
all 3 new external tensioners
cylinder compression test (just for the logbook)

still not sure what to make of the tensioners in the engine now being in the wrong holes

The good news is they're all the same diameter, just not the same length or tension. It looks like you lucked out and got the two that are the same length but most likely not the same pressure on the tensioner paddle which is causing your rattle issue. Check your oil sump for pad material during your oil change, and fingers crossed you caught this before extensive damage to the soft bits.
