Bill... I'm definitely no mechanical expert on these motors, but my gut feeling is you don't want a motor that has gone through so many modifications. His user name is sub-zero and the engine is too! ;) I wouldn't touch it with a 10 ft pole. Read Drola's followup clarifying the build and the unfortunately problems that followed. Definitely a coat of many colors!

Can't hurt to investigate.

Absolutely! Just be careful man. Hate to hear you've been burned by a problem engine! ;)

Bill, I would be cautious. The whole car has a massive story attached to it. The guy selling it is a performance car shop owner, yet he had to get another mechanic trying to fix this 996, and he later crapped on that mechanic. He clearly BSed in his original post about car running great and just having "AC wire disconnected", as his friend later commented that there are numerous other issues with a car and it runs as if it has carburetors- it idles good, and runs at full throttle, nothing in between.

I would not pay more than $2,500 for that engine since you are in Hawaii. I am sure he won't offer you any warranty on the engine and your recourse once you receive it will be non-existent. With Outfax you will not get anything if the car is running like crap, as no-one on this board will have the ability or capacity to diagnose the car with stand alone ECU or take apart the engine on the spot to examine the sump plate.

Be careful here brother.

I appreciate all the sound advice.
He did say he did not want to part it out until someone interested in the motor had a chance to see and hear it run.
I don't think he's trying to pull a fast one . but then you never know these days...

I'll say this though, $8K will not happen!
