So, I went and done it. I signed up for a "intro to DE" at NJ Motorsports Park on April 28th. It's a one day session with a classroom and laps, run by my local PCA and sponsored by the local Porsche dealer.

Tech inspection is tonight. I have to admit to a little nervousness about the DE, but I've been thinking about this so long that I think I'd regret it if I didn't go for it. I need to get this desire to floor it out of my system.
My concerns are:
- My 18-year-old car explodes in some fashion
- I am terrible at it, car goes four-wheelin'
- I love and have to find a track car.
Off to find a helmet!
Your car will be at no greater risk at this event than on the street. Pushing any car hard enough to impose additional mechanical risk is not something you (or anyone who hasn't ever done this before) is capable of doing. That's just a simple fact. Even if you are in the top 10% of street driver talent/capability, what happens on a track is really just on a different level. I would get arrested for doing what my car does on a track if I did it on the street. And I'm not that good.
Unlikely. Not impossible, but really unlikely.
Probable. It's a tremendous hobby and I've found the bestest friends I have made as an adult have been at the track.
I'd offer to send you my backup helmet so you can try before you buy anything but it's open face and illegal in NJ.
