A link to this just popped up in my email. It appears that Porsche Classic motor oils, previously only available for the air cooled cars are now formulated (?) or at the very least, recommended for our cars (as well as some of the transaxle models)

Just in time for the start of the new year, Porsche Classic is launching motoroils for water-cooled four-cylinder and eight-cylinder engines and water-cooled six-cylinder engines to complement its existing motoroil for lawnmower four- and six-cylinder flat engines. And, as ever, the Porsche Classic label means a product made with Porsche Classic ingenuity.

What thinketh the hive mind? Does Porsche know best for their own cars? The answer seems pretty obvious, until you remember that they were also the authors of the IMSB disaster, so...do they really?

Anyone tempted to drop what is probably a heavy premium (I'm too lazy to look up how much of a premium) on oil from the manufacturer specifically for our cars? I am leaning no.

They didn't make it easy to find the price so I'm not bothering either. Given their dealer markup for M1, however, I suspect that you are indeed correct about the pricing.

M1 5/30 has gotten ours 18 years and 70-odd thousand miles so far, so we'll stick with that

Since I had the LN Engineering IMS thing done, I've opted to try their Driven DT-40 oil that is allegedly forumulated for the M96 motor. I have a case sitting on the shelf....waiting for the weather to warm up.

I'm pretty sure the Motul is "good enough". I wouldn't be surprised if the Motul is actually better.

My Indy swears by it. The first time we took the 996 to him for an oil change it had never burned a drop of oil in ~65k miles. He put Motul in it and it had lost a liter before the next OCI. Have made him put M1 back in it since and while it's not back to burning no oil it's maybe 1/8th of a liter.

About the same time I let him change the P!g's oil too and he put Motul in it as well. I had done the previous 3 OCIs myself and the gauge on the dash never moved on me. On the Motul in 3k on the Motul it went from the top of the gauge to the bottom and I had to get it topped off again. Similarly to the 996 I had him go back to what I had been using (VW's diesel specific oil (never remember if it is Penzoil or Valvoline)) and it is better, but it's still burning 1/4 to 1/2 on the oil gauge (I think that's about half a liter IIRC) between OCIs.

Everyone that actually understands oils tells me that it is coincidence and the oil couldn't do that, but two cars with well known track records doing the same thing is a little hard to swallow.

Has anyone here run a 5W-50 oil in their 996 before?

Yikes, $96 bucks for only a little more than half what you need. My local NAPA usually has enough in stock for me.

Good question. I use 5W-40 based on recommendations from Porsche. Any theories on why Porsche changed the viscosity to a thicker oil? This is potentially a big question, no?

Maybe to combat the bore scoring issues?
