Hello from Tasmania and Dash topic

Post by metrod » Mon Jul 22, 2019 10:42 pm

Just want to say hi from Tasmania,

I have a 2001 996 coupe, after owning aircooled 911's this is just as great an experience!.
Due to some leather shrinkage I decided to tackle recovering the dash myself and after looking at the "Definitive guide to removing a 996 dash"' from another forum took the plunge.

The truth is it certainly is NOT the definitive guide, there are some valuable photo's but removing all the ancillary pieces before hand is just as big a job.

I will endeavour to itemise how I did it in the near future and some pitfalls but if anybody is tackling it in the meantime drop me a message I am more than happy to help.

And yes the steering wheel is on the wrong side!!!

Once again look forward to being part of the 996 family.

Wow!

Our dash has a bubble, but I've removed a couple of other dashes in more spacious cars before so I'm just going with "the bubble gives it character"

gnat: On your bubble would it be possible to use a hypodermic to inject the proper glue and weight it down until sticks?

I did notice that and made me laugh! I suppose you drive on the "wrong" side of the road as well? When we go on vacation and rent a car set-up like that it drives the wife nutz.

That's probably the route we'll go if I ever get off my ass to find a good interior shop in the area.

Welcome metrod! That's a great project to tackle. My previous 996 had leather shrinkage, but like gnat, I just lived with it. It seems like a relatively big project to tackle for a purely cosmetic problem, so I suspect many people do the same. It will be good to have a guide.

Thank you everybody for the response.
Do I drive on the wrong side of the road that maybe a discussion I won’t get into.

In regards to the dash don’t be afraid mine is back in and has even got rid of some annoying rattles, always nice to know how your car works plus I just couldn’t live with that leather it was torturing me every time I looked at it!!
