987S Rebuild Thread

So why the heck is a 987S rebuild thread started on the 996outpost? Because the same concepts will apply to a 996. And because I’m going a non-traditional route despite my respect for FSI and the typical LN Engineering Nickies solution. I would go with LN in a heartbeat, but my car is an ‘05 Boxster S with a Flood title (but no sign of actually being in a flood) and a bad engine(most likely why it was claimed to have flood.) First class just isn’t in the cards.

But it turns out that Darton makes a heck of a performance sleeve that’s used in everything from Lambo’s to top-fuel drag racers. My local machine shop just happens to use Darton as their performance sleeve of choice as well. I know JE makes a piston that will work and that’s about as far as I’ve gotten. So that plan is a low budget, high quality, high output 3.2 -> 3.6 rebuild. There is a lot of planning to do and I’ve got other projects ahead of it so this is more of a teaser than anything.

Looking forward to seeing your build thread, Slakker. We need more technical threads here on 996Outpost, so no worries that it isn't exactly a 996. As you say, the similarity of the powerplants makes many of the concepts applicable to the 996.

I'm in the early planning phases of my first 996 project and I'll be really interested to see how you manage with the new Darton formula. I have no experience with any manufacturer thus far, so all I ever hear about is LN Nickies. I'm signed up for the class this April, so I know that is what I'm going to be working on in the Raby Lab, but I'm eager to see other solutions.

I think I’m going to take the high performance version in June. I’ve verified it’s the same curriculum but with more focus on higher outputs. Right now I’m waiting to hear back if the online course is a prerequisite. $400 for a 4 hour webinar is crazy.

Cool! I don't know if this makes a difference to you but I was told by Jud that there is a mistake on the 101 class, it's actually 8 hours over 2 days. Maybe they made the same mistake on the 201 class.

I was told by "Rebecca" that both were only 4 hours. I told her one said 8 and one said 4 and she said the one that said 8 was a mistake. Hmmmm. It would definitely make it more appetizing for that kind of money. I'll email Jud and see what he says about the 201.

LOL - maybe we need to give them time to figure out operations. Once they got everything up and ready Rebecca fell ill and it sounded to me like they had wished they waited for her to get back. Hope you're able to go!
