Congratulations! Looks like a very fine example of the Mk1 996. Tell your story. How did you find it? Did you conduct a Pre-purchase inspection?

Love the interest!

I found it on Autotrader listed for $20k, which with 48k miles seemed too good to be true. I’ve been looking for about 4 months and have been close to buying a couple times but knew I was paying market price (which, as a cheap skate, irked me) and I couldn’t pull the trigger. This time I pulled the trigger.

I asked for a picture of the options sticker and checked the Carfax. Car has been in California its whole life, was on its second owner (since 2012), and had been serviced regularly. IMS was done in 2013. Options sticker showed it had the luxury package (Incl. Xenon headlamps) but nothing special. Definitely felt too good to be true.

From there I dogged the seller for more info and everything checked out. He’s retired and moved to Southern California and had to keep the car in a storage unit because his new house could only fit two cars. He felt bad about it being a chore to go to the unit weekly to drive it and thought it was better off in someone else’s hands.

Of course, I was on vacation for all this and wouldn’t be able to pick up the car for at least a week. This was complicating things because he was receiving a lot of interest and people were offering to come over to his house with cash the same day. I told him I was committed and had my dad go see it and give him a cash deposit. This calmed him. My dad (a mechanic) called me back and said the car was perfect, inside and out. I booked a flight to Southern California and called the seller and said I would buy it at his listed price, and that I'd be sending my flight information. I also asked him to take it to the local Porsche specialist for a PPI. He obliged and I told him that as long as the PPI showed nothing catastrophic, I'd see him on Tuesday to exchange payment and take the car to drive back to San Francisco. I sent my flight info and didn't receive a response back over the weekend.

Monday comes around and the PPI happens (seller is taking it there for me, I am paying). The mechanic doing the PPI calls me and says the car is perfect. Brake pads will need to be done soon and the tires are due for replacement soon too. But, no leaks, no rattles, the interior looks like it's never been sat in, etc. About 30 minutes after the PPI phone call I get an email from the seller and he says, in summary, "if you don't want the car, I understand, and I'll happily refund your deposit." At this point, I am very confused. I respond back and say,"no, I want the car and I'll see you tomorrow at the airport." He responds back and says "OK."

I give it some thought and figure he either a) is having second thoughts or b) he realizes he underpriced the car and he could get more $$.

I arrive the next day. He picks me up. We go to the bank. I pay, he gives me the title. As we're driving to the storage unit for me to drop him off he says, "you know, the mechanic at the Porsche shop said this car is worth $25k...so you're getting a deal." I smiled and said, "I am OK with that."

I drove it back to San Francisco that night and it was incredible. The car is in fantastic shape and it is sooooo fun to drive.

The last thing to share is, sadly, as I was driving down the 10 freeway in LA, a piece of tire rubber was bouncing across the freeway, I swerved to miss it but it hit the passenger side rear fender in front of the wheel well and left a small scratch. Pretty bummed, but still vey happy with the car.

I posted elsewhere on the site, but I am in the market for some very clean, used Sport Classic II 18" wheels.

Wow, really nice car with low miles. Welcome! Which replacement IMS does it have? The reason I mention it is that the LN bearings have a mileage/year shelf life. You might want to look into how long the one you have has left. Mine is due to be replaced next year and I think I'm going with the LN Solution, which doesn't have a shelf life.

Good luck with it! I try to keep the mileage down on mine, and find that its impossible. Its too fun to drive.

I own two Carreras right now. One is my car in my avatar which lived in CA its entire life, the other is a yellow cabriolet from New Jersey that I'm rebuilding as a project. The NJ cab was not properly taken care of and the outside of the engine looked like it got found with the Titanic wreckage. I lay underneath my green car for therapy now. The bolts.... they're so beautiful. I could cry... *Sniffle*. Enjoy it in great health!
