Now that is a hell of a list of new things!

Took mine out for a 100 mile drive to stock up on some more whisky due to this extended winter drawing the supply dangerously low

I changed the serpentine belt. There was no record of it being changed (28k mi 14 yrs).
We had a nice sunny day today so I put my new, very stiff, belt out in the sun to soften up a little and went back in the garage to pull the old one. I looked at the routing around the pulleys and thought how easy, ribbed to ribbed, smooth to smooth over this around that, I got this.
Out with the old and in with my nice warm, flexible new belt. Let’s see, around here over that one? No not there that is smooth to ribbed. Ok this way looks good, ribbed to ribbed, smooth to... no that only works if the belt is a Möbius strip. Hmm, ok ok I got it over this around that now it’s working, if I leave the power steering pulley out of the loop.
AARRG!
1/2 hour later I admitted defeat and went in to the manual, made a copy of the belt layout page and stuck it in front of me in the engine bay. And...look how easy ribbed to ribbed over this ...etc. Five minutes later I was hunting around for the loose airbox grommets that I knocked off, again! AARRGG!

It really is easy if your memory is longer than a minute or you make a picture of the belt before you remove it.

Found a pic that made it easier it shows routing like this:
1 water pump, 2 tensioner, 3 crank, 4 power steering, 5 idler below PS, 6 ac pulley, 7 alternator, crank the tensioner to full loose, 8 slide it over the idler below alternator.

Serpentine belts are always a mindscrew...while the old one is on, it looks perfectly logical; as soon as the belt is off, it becomes one of the great mysteries of the universe.

I channeled my inner "The Deck Man" and did some DIY yesterday! No, no, I didn't replace the entire suspension system with one that I hand-fabricated myself, but still I did turn a couple of drain plugs.

Started it up for the first time in a couple of weeks. Then, changed the oil. Since I had it done by my indy last time (he was doing some other work), it ended up taking me a couple of hours (when it should have taken 20 minutes) because I hadn't changed the oil myself in a couple of years. After getting it up on my 4-post lift and removing the engine case plug, I had to think where the dry sump reservoir drain was. That took way longer than it should have (almost had to Google it). I left the turbo drains alone. Then, I had to scrounge around and find my oil filter wrench. Once I found it and messed around with it unsuccessfully for about 10 minutes, I realized that I bought another one that actually worked. Scrounge around for another 10 minutes to find that one. Then, fiddled around with 2 different funnels to get one that worked without pouring oil all over the back of my car and engine (I just love where they put that oil filler). Finally, I was extra paranoid about not overfilling, so even though I removed just over 7 liters of oil, I started with putting in 6 liters and checking the oil level, then of course 2 more rounds of adding small amounts to get it to the middle of the "low" and "full" marks on the gauge. A professional mechanic I am not. Was still fun to get under the car, look around, lubricate the wastegate actuators and get dirty.

Frunk, know the feeling! Some times those 20 minute tasks seem to snowball into "Where the hell did I put that special tool?!" "Damnit cant find tool or my damn beer!? Arg!!!"

I found putting some of the special tools like filter wrenches/sockets in a special drawer in the tool box or even in a plastic lidded container marked "996 Turbo Oil Change Tools" or "BMW Fan Belt Tools" makes for a much nicer experience.

That's a very good idea.

Did an oil change on the 996tt yesterday. I started out by forgetting to put the ramp extensions on my 4-post lift ramps and ended up with this:

Not as bad as it looks - I had one end detached already from getting caught on a curb this winter. I lost the plastic rivet on that that end in the process, so it was already loose. I made a quick run to Advance Auto Parts and found a 2-pack of perfectly sized GM plastic fender rivets for a couple of bucks. It’s a 5 minute job to reattach it.

As for the oil change itself, it went relatively smoothly. I forgot to swap the filter out until after I added the oil - duh. The filter on a 996tt is on top of the engine, and it drains out when the engine is off. So, no big deal there to swap it out after adding the clean oil. Here is my high-tech oil catch pan and support tower:

I also lubed the wastegate actuators. I had to make a second trip to AdvanceAuto to get some silicone spray lube. I’m intrigued by the design of the cap, with the 2 notches - what the hell are they for? I thought maybe for the little red straw taped to the side of the can, but it doesn’t really fit. Plus, even if the straw fit in there, what’s the purpose? It wouldn’t be a good spot to store the straw. What say you?

No idea but someone needs to work on this. I always lose the damn straw. Probably have three cans of stuff missing the straws. Where the hell do the straws go??? Must be a small black hole on my workbench...
