If you have time, that would be excellent. It does look clean. Gray is ok, prefer black though but not a dealbreaker. I am guessing you would know of a PPI place there too, if we were to get to that point?

I told my friend that he and I may be looking at a 911 Turbo after lunch, and based on his reaction, I think we may have been going to look at it no matter what you said

He's the most pedantic person in the world and points things out about my car that irritate the hell out of me. This should go swimmingly. I'll send you my notes after we get done.

And hell yeah if it's worth a PPI; Trophy Performance or Carl's Place.

Ok, here we go! Staring off with a video of a hot start, the salesman told me the car had just gotten back from a test drive.

Here's the write-up:

Both headlights had a crystalline residue seemingly underneath the lens, it looked like moisture trapped inside the lens which had evaporated multiple times. Not ruling out clear coat damage but I couldn't feel it with my fingertips. The driver's side headlight also had a seal separating from the bumper, this was not happening on the passenger side. Speaking of the bumper - it needs bumper plugs for the front plate holes.

The frunk opened no problem, and held itself up, thought he struts were a bit weak. Footwell mats were in the frunk (no pic.) Some of the rubber matting by the frunk release had broken away, and the rest was brittle. Rubber boot on frunk latch was cracked.

The wheels were in 100,000 mile condition. The right rear had heavy curbing, the rest had a bit of curbing. There was some sun-fade on the calipers, particularly on the passenger front wheel. Rotors looked a bit grooved, probably near the end of their life cycle. The tires were brand new and smelled like fresh rubber.

The overall exterior paint condition was great. Some light swirling in the the clear coat but being a silver car it wasn't obvious. No dings, dents, chips, scrapes, or anything cosmetic to speak of for the paintwork.

The struts on the engine lid were too weak to pop the lid open, so we had to do some teamwork: one man pulling on the lid while one man hit the switch. I had this issue on my Carrera and a new strut solved it.

I checked for the notorious wide body tail light bracket cracking and there was a thin crack at the top mounting screw of both tail lights, but the bottoms were fine. The lights didn't seem like they would pop out any time soon! Surely a set of tail light savers would go a long way, regardless.

Interior notes: Leather is worn on the drivers door-side bolster, which is typical for a car with this mileage. Leather felt soft and condition was good for a car of its age. Typical wear and tear of the center console for a grey car. The gauge cluster had after market dials installed, in grey. I noted that there was an alignment issue with the speedometer, only. Looked like the numbers were not in alignment with the lights behind - especially on the 50 MPH & 75 MPH indicators.

Shifter felt nice and tight.

Windows rolled up and down just fine, with no grinding. The sunroof opened no problem, however, we had a bear of a time getting it to close. It kept stopping halfway and then opening itself again. Mercifully, on the 8th or 9th try, it finally walked itself back. Nobody was pushing on it, we just kept trying until it closed itself.

It didn't smell like anybody had smoked inside of it, and the a/c was blowing nice and cold on a 102 degree day.

Let me know if you are curious about anything I didn't mention. These are all of my notes but I may be able to recollect something if you ask about it.

Doc- THANK YOU! Awesome write up. Questions:

1- do they normally smoke that much on startup?
2- What do you and your buddy rate this, given the price/condition, in the cargurus rating system- high priced, fair deal, good deal, great deal? I know from a price perspective, this is about 5-10K lower for a manual than what I am finding. I have seen numerous tips that are at or close to this price , but I do not want a tip, or a cab.
3- you did not smell cigarette smoke in it? That would be a deal breaker if it were.

Thank you again.

1) I looked this up because I wasn't sure and it seems like the consensus is that it's normal as long as it's a short puff, which I would say this was. It cleared up and didn't return after the first few seconds.

2) This is hard to say.. I am reluctant to say great deal because the car seemed like it needed a bit of love to get some of the minor cosmetic stuff done. Cosmetically I'd say it was an 8/10 exterior, 7/10 interior. Mechanically you'd probably want to schedule that PPI and get a mechanic's take on it. I think it's fair to say that over the first few years you may put that 5-10k back into the car to get it into pristine shape.

Final answer- good deal.

3) Nope, didn't smell any cigarette smoke!

You're welcome - glad I could help 8-)

Nice looking car. I'd want to add some black to that interior to break up the gray, so would refinish some of those skinned up pieces. I'm thinking $33,000 for that car.

KC- it is a no haggle price dealership, so it would be 36599 plus dealer fees. I am mulling it over, but open to opinions. It's a fine line between waiting but not wanting to miss something either.

I agree, the center console I would remove and paint black to break it up and remove those scratches.

Have no experience with the turbros and I realize DR researched it, but is that amount of smoke really normal for a hot start? Did the smoke smell like fuel or was it just cat moisture burn off?? Second thing: is it just the recording or does the engine have a pronounced clatter sound? If it was an NA I would think piston slap. Maybe just the phone sensitivity.

Both "normal" for a 996tt. Not all smoke like that at start up, but many do. Same for the clatter.
