Summer Wheel Search

Post by FRUNKenstein » Thu Dec 12, 2019 5:44 pm

As I’ve mentioned in other threads, I am going to buy another set of wheels this spring for the 996tt and put a fresh set of summer tires on them. Then, I’ll buy a set of all-season tires next fall and mount them on my current OZ Allegeritas, which are graphite finish 18x8 fronts and 18x10 rears. The all-season tires will be a little narrower than summer tires. For the summer wheels, I’d like a lighter color (some type of silver) and I’d like to go wider: 18x8.5 fronts and 18x11 rears.

Shopping on Tirerack.com lets you view the wheels on a mock-up of your car. Here are my current wheels:

Here is a nice set of BBS, about $1,350 for the set, but in 8 and 10 widths and also a darker color:

Here is a set of Flow One (never heard of that brand) wheels in a little lighter gray and in the 8.5 and 11 widths. Only about $1,050 for the set.

There are only 3 reviews on them, but generally good reviews.

A better look at the BBS. I wish they were a lighter color and wider width. That would make it an easy choice as I really like the design and it is a quality brand.

However, there’s just something about these wheels that draws me to them, but I can’t place my finger on it . . .

I like the RED wheels on the red car - what Nebraska native wouldn't? - but I've also seen both gold and copper wheels on red Porsches & Ferraris. Interesting, but I don't have any images on hand to share.

So, I decided that, Covid-19 crisis be damned, I am ordering new wheels to go along with a new set of summer tires. This is what the rears on my car look like at the moment:

So, clearly it’s time. General GMax tires are on sale through April 30th by way of a $70 rebate. I’ve decided on the Flow One Race Spec F2 wheels shown above, 18x8.5 & 18x11. They are very reasonably priced - around $1,100 for the set. If I buy a set from Tirerack.com, they will mount and road force balance the tires on the wheels for free, saving me about $100 from having to have a set of tires mounted to my current rims (making the net cost of the wheels about $1,000). All told, with sales tax, free shipping, mounting, balancing and the $70 rebate, I’m looking at $1,747. Not bad.

That being said, for those of you who don’t know me, I’m cheap. I have until April 30th to find a discount on the wheels. I keep thinking that there’s got to be some kind of promo code out there. I contacted Tire Rack to see if they had some kind of special to encourage purchasing stuff during what must be a slow time for them - but nope. I asked if they give a military discount (I’m retired Navy). Nope. Hmm, I think, there must be another reseller of Flow One wheels, so maybe price shop the competition. But if there is another reseller, I can’t find ‘em.

So, anybody have any other ideas regarding discount hunting on the wheels? I still have 10 days before I have to order.

You have probably already checked them out, but I keep getting emails from ECS Tuning with all kinds of stuff on sale right now, including wheels. No idea if they even have any decent wheels for your TT though. All that I have ever purchased from them are small parts like a non-smoker kit so not a recommendation. Warning - if you buy something you will get one or two emails a day from them.
