Any PA/Audio geeks here?

Post by gnat » Thu Oct 11, 2018 9:33 am

We support a local bird rescue (rehab injured birds of prey) and went to one of their publicity things this weekend. Unfortunately it was loud (brewery) and it was almost impossible to hear what they were saying during their presentation.

Having no idea about such things I looked and saw that you can get portable PA systems pretty damn cheap, but still too much for their shoe string budget, so I'm thinking of picking something up and donating it. The problem is that I have no experience so I have no idea how to judge what is and isn't good.

The biggest requirement is that it has to be dead simple to use. Like idiot proof simple as the lead vet apparently can barely keep her Facebook page up to date. It doesn't need to work for mob size crowds, just loud enough to cover maybe 20-50 feet over ambient noise.

The system doesn't need to be anything fancy, just speakers, a mic, and stands that would work well on uneven ground (some of the events she does outside where she releases the birds back to the wild). Multi-color back lighting, playing music from memory cards, etc.. is not needed.

Anyone have any recommendations on the <$500 arena?

These all-in-one units are perfect for...um...the less technically inclined:

https://www.amazon.com/ION-Audio-Tailga ... ref=sr_1_6

Those with built-in bluetooth can stream audio from your phone as well - for just $120, you could be a _shitty_ dj!

Not sure about the physical size - I wouldn't get one with a smaller driver than 10" or so. At Fry's (our local electronics superstravaganza), they have everything from tiny portable units to two-turntable DJ rigs with lights and smoke - but all self-contained. If you've ever lugged speakers an amp, a mixer, mics, mic stands, mic cables, XLR cables, phono cables, phantom power adapters, wireless mics, blah blah blah blah, and you don't especially want to be that guy again, these things are SWEET.

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

Gone hunting with Alec Baldwin and Dick Cheney. Back soon.

Ok, let me get this straight. You're at a brewery, getting drunk and naked, swinging around on your pole, screaming the song - "Pour some sugar on me!" while you blow kisses at all the 80 year old women?

You really want us to believe it's for a good cause? pffffffff!
