This might be worth a shot for a little more umph up those San Diego hills (we called this JATO in the Navy):

The bar ends allow me to flip the bike upside down and work on it without tearing up the brakes, shifter, throttle, etc. - and will hopefully absorb any whacks the handlebars take in the event of careless cycling...

This shot shows the SLA battery pack (20 pounds, give or take) hanging from the top tube. The chunky red and black wires were the original connectors for the rack-mount UPS module that "donated" the batteries; better quick-connectors are coming eventually to make battery charging and swapping easier.

With the torque arm installed, no more shenanigans with the lowers. Even so, I really like to take it easy on the throttle. I may replace the thumb throttle with something a little more precise...while it's fun to blast down the street wide-open, pedal assist at low speed is a little touchy.

Charge-o-meter, throttle, and comically large brake levers with integrated kill switches...

I hope your batteries never have a catastrophic failure cause you will end up singing castrato soprano in Italian operas. Ouch! Actually it looks pretty cool despite the unfortunate placement of the batteries(at least the batteries are not Li-ion or you would be doomed!)

Heh - of all the things Mrs. Schnell might be concerned about - broken legs, arms, skull - the placement of the batteries is the only one she's mentioned aloud.

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

Gone hunting with Alec Baldwin and Dick Cheney. Back soon.

Update: Rode the bike back to work from home @ noon. The route I went is 12 miles of mostly flat grade, a few long (quarter-mile or so) uphill segments of at least 5 degrees.

I also wasted ridiculous amounts of power just having fun, seldom bothering to pedal, not bothering to conserve any kind of momentum (hills, traffic signals, etc.), and it still had power to spare when I got here.

I haven't retorqued everything yet, but I'm stoked at how well it performed. No rattles, no surprise, not a single sketchy moment.

For the record, my crappy e-bike will walk a Prius from a dig.
