Best Mod, Worst Mod

Post by FRUNKenstein » Sun Dec 16, 2018 7:30 pm

Very simple: list the mods you've done to your car in either "Best" or "Worst". You can have more than one "best" or "worst". I'll start.

Best: Aux input cable on stock Porsche radio in my '99 C4. Cost $5, took 5 minutes, allowed me to use my phone to stream music through the stock system.

Worst: Not really a mod, but replacing engine mounts. Have done it on both the '99 C4 and the '02 996tt. Didn't notice a significant difference in either car. Many will swear new mounts will transform the car.

Ok, I’ll play..

Best: did my own fister mod to the exhaust. Used 1.75” diameter stainless steel tube for the bypass. Love the sound inside and outside.

Worst: as part of replacing the orange front marker lights with smoked clear lenses, I installed orange LED light bulb replacements. They were just a hair too long an I could never get them to stay in a position where they wold light up correctly. Switched to orange incandescent bulbs and all is well.

Best - for me, the best mod (if this counts) is getting the IMS Solution installed on my 996 over going with another OEM or other non-oil fed bearing.

Worst - Even though I think it looked awesome, I probably wouldn't update the stock Carrera front bumper to a Turbo bumper again. That cost me a lot of money to make happen with virtually no return on the investment other than the "cool factor". If I did anything like that in the future, it would be to add the GT3 Aero kit to my car which is better fit for the narrow body cars IMHO. But that's even more money and so I'm so trying to resist the urge to dump more money in the car and just enjoy it for the way it is.

Two bests for the C2 cabriolet were gundo hack on the exhaust and RoW M030 sport suspension to replace the 14 yr old original parts. Worst was wasting money replacing stock Bose MOST sound system with new double din unit mainly for Bluetooth phone connectivity. It's just too noisy in there for phone to work well so I now just use wired ear buds again with reasonable success.

Best for the C4S was the Quicksilver exhaust system - wow what amazingly well built, light weight and excellent sounding mufflers. Worst was replacing Sumitomos that came with the car with another set of Sumitomos instead of Michelins. Can't wear them out quickly enough having now driven an identical car with the Michelins equipped. Lesson learned.

Next will be a quality suspension upgrade on the 4S.

Best mod: 996Outpost.com decal
Worst mod: That additional drive shaft that was VERY briefly installed in my front left wheel well near Vegas back in '17.

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

Gone hunting with Alec Baldwin and Dick Cheney. Back soon.
