A previous owner of my car had the first version of the LNE bearing installed. I am over the recommended time interval and close to the mileage interval. I went back and forth on whether to leave it or change it out. LNE had a Black Friday sale and another stackable discount so I decided to purchase the updated IMS Retrofit. I plan to install it sometime in March and will post pics of the bearing after I pull it.OceanBlue2000 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 30, 2018 10:32 am I've got a sort of relevant question. I am two years (and tens of thousands of miles) away from the time limit on my LNE bearing. Has anyone had the bearing installed long enough to have to go through replacement? How did the bearing look? Does the car need to be re-evaluated again (and thus may fail)? Are there discounts for the second bearing? Or is the recommendation to go with the solution (which is probably what I will do)?

Mostly safe: The oldest 996's - those built in and before 1999 and a few after - were equipped with a fairly robust dual-row bearing.
This is what I have. Built in early 1998. Watched the PCA video with Jack Raby and have decided the risk is pretty low. Have had the car for 12 years now, put on 40,000 miles(88,000 miles on the odometer now).

Re: The Dreaded IMSB
I’ve decided to install the IMS Solution rather than the IMS Retrofit. I’ll start a seperate thread on the install process sometime next week after getting started.
I’ll have an IMS Retrofit up for sale soon since I’m not installing it.

Look forward to reading your story. You're making a wise decision to go with the IMS solution early. If only had another 5 grand sitting around.

You can see the dreaded IMSB peeking through just waiting to destroy the world. Okay, maybe just an M96 engine.

Re: The Dreaded IMSB
When I was a tech for Roger Beasley Porsche in Austin I never got the opportunity to see an imsb failure. I was under the impression that the dual row bearing was on cars made after 2004 and the previous models made between 2002 and 2004 had updated single row bearings and the older cars (99-2001 the 3.4liter cars) had the bearings most prone to failures. Guess I was mistaken. That said though they make imsb's for 997's clean up to 2009 and I have yet to hear of any of them letting loose. A good friend of mine just tossed the bearing in his Cayman-S again (3.4 liter) so his engine is toast. Now I'm curious how many 3.6 cars have chucked the ims and its bearing through the block.....
