DIY IMS Solution Install

I purchased my 2004 C4S last March so I've had it about a year. It was purchased from a dealer so I didn't receive any service records, but it received a passing PPI from RAC in Dallas. I tried to do as much preventative maintenance as possible to make sure it had a good baseline. Within the first 2,000 miles of ownership, I replaced the motor mounts, belt, pulleys, water pump, thermostat, coolant, spark plugs, coil packs, oil, and brake fluid. Due to brittle plastic cracking, I have also replace the oil filter tube and AOS vent tube. Also, an LN spin-on filter adapter and magnetic drain plug were done during the first oil change. I'm sure I am leaving off a few things.

My C4S had an IMS Retrofit done in the past, but was never registered with LN Engineering. We were able to determine that is was a Classic Retrofit done sometime in 2012 based on the serial number of the sticker. I am past the service interval by time and had considered just leaving it as is until the clutch went out. However, the LN Black Friday sale was enough for me to purchase a new IMS Retrofit and tools. I was all set to install it this week, but at the last minute decided to purchase the IMS Solution as it is what I really wanted to install. Jason at Warehouse 33 has one on the way and it should be here on Tuesday. I will have a new IMS Retrofit up for sale soon.

Along with the IMS Solution, I plan to install a new clutch, dual mass flywheel, pressure plate, RMS and transmission mount bushing. Since the tensioners will be out, I am going to replace those too. There will be other little parts changed out as well.

I am doing the install in my small two car garage. The plan is to use a Quickjack BL-5000XL that I've had a few years. This should get the car off the ground 18". I ordered the SUV adapters which should lift up the car another 7". I am using a Harbor Freight scissor trans jack.

The IMS solution should be here on Tuesday so I will start the process Tuesday night. The plan is to do a little bit at a time so that I work slowly and not miss anything or get too frustrated.

I did a little bit of the pre-qualification this afternoon. The instructions have you check a few items before attempting the install.

Range 2 over revs - Per Durametric: 2 / 1441.7h

Camshaft position 1 deviation: 1.39
Camshaft position 2 deviation: 1.44

Crankcase Manometer Test: 5.04

Fault Codes: P0442 - I know about this and will continue with the install, but will find the resolution shortly after the install of the IMS Solution.


Ready Status: All ready with the exception of the Catalytic converter efficiency which shows as a fail. I will also work on this post IMS Solution install.

Sump Plate - I have removed it in the recent past and did not find any material in the pan.


I have a few more items to check, but that is where I am at as of Sunday night.
