My favorite 45-minute 996 drive - in a Jeep, in 3.5 minutes

Post by 5chn3ll » Mon Dec 02, 2019 1:40 pm

This is one of my favorite 996 drives - from Yucaipa to Big Bear City via State Highway 38. On summer tires with warm roads and no traffic, it is epic. On M+S tires in M+S with a sh!t-ton of terrible drivers on the road, it's not quite as epic.

This route takes me 45 minutes in the 996. This time-lapse spans 1.5 hours (the day before Thanksgiving). The trip back up the following night took 6 hours (including the hellish time on the Cajon Pass, through the desert and up SH 18)...

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

Looks like a fun ride in an alternate (dry) reality. So that's 45 minutes as an A-B drive, 90 minutes as a loop?

In your video I was keeping my eye on the shoulder for all of the "should we... should we try it?" folks

Should have bought a Honda... I will post my drive to Flagstaff this same weekend... And my road conditions were worse. And I have 3 inches of ground clearance and Fwd with all season $60/tire milestar MS932s tires. 😂 😂 😂

That video was Weds with 3" of snow. Thursday was 24-36 inches...the roads were littered with heroes w/ 3" of ground clearance. ;)

That looks really fun without the snow, but no thanks. I've got pretty good experience driving in the snow, but avoid it whenever possible. What were the guys on the side of the road doing, putting on chains or discussing where to turn around?

Yup - that's the chain-up point...but it's California, so most of them were probably pulled over for a few bong rips and to let the kids play in the middle of the highway.
