Not near your trip, but...SAC museum at Ashland, NE has an SR71 hanging in the lobby. When I walked in the first time I was stunned!
Never gonna make you cry...
Re: Good Week @ 996Outpost.com
That's a nice pose for it. As well as living next door to VWHQ I also live next door to the Air & Space Annex:32wildbilly wrote: ↑Wed Jan 13, 2021 8:34 am Not near your trip, but...SAC museum at Ashland, NE has an SR71 hanging in the lobby. When I walked in the first time I was stunned!

You get a really great look at it from above as you come in.
Definitely worth the trip if you are in the DC area for any reason.

Huh, wow, I had no idea. I think I actually flew in there for touch-and-goes a couple of times back in the early '90s. Next trip to SoCal, I'll have to check it out. Thanks!

Yup, that's a fantastic museum. I actually drilled for 2 years at SAC at Offutt AFB in Omaha in 2000 & 2001. I wasn't on-site on 9/11/01, but one of my buddies was. He got trapped in there for several days - they wouldn't let anyone in or out of the building.32wildbilly wrote: ↑Wed Jan 13, 2021 8:34 am Not near your trip, but...SAC museum at Ashland, NE has an SR71 hanging in the lobby. Also, our Boy Scout troop makes a trip there for their "night at the museum" weekend every other year, and you actually get to spend the night in the museum. Important safety tip - bring a pad for under your sleeping bag as their floors are really hard. Ask me how I know. So, I'm luck to been to the SAC museum several times. It is over 300,000 square feet of enclosed space. If you are driving cross-country, it's worth a detour to see it.

My niece is currently a docent at the March museum. I am working this angle to see if I can get a picture of my 996 with an SR-71.
Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.
Gone hunting with Alec Baldwin and Dick Cheney. Back soon.

Re: Good Week @ 996Outpost.com
Speaking of vacations, I have memories of my family going to Disneyland at Christmas time in 1969, when I was 5 years old (we lived in Oregon at the time, so we just drove). The memories are a little fuzzy, but I have always thought I was wearing a suit and tie. Nah, I tell myself, that's crazy. For one thing, we had very little money (we stayed in a 1-room apartment with my aunt & uncle who was in the Navy). For another - who the hell would dress a kid up in a freaking suit and tie to go to Disneyland?!?!
Well, I was visiting my mom on Sunday afternoon, and she dragged out some old pictures to look through. And damn -there it was, a pic of me, my sister and Mickey Mouse at Disneyland, and I'm wearing a suit and tie! I looked at Mom and said "Hey, I know I had a great time and it was a big sacrifice for you and Dad to take the 4 kids to Disneyland and all, BUT WHAT THE HELL?" I suppose things have changed in the past 52 years, and maybe it was normal. Anyhow, for your viewing pleasure:
(I'm sure when Schnelly's parents took him, he was sporting a mullet and parachute pants.)

Awesome!
Nice thing about the SAC museum is almost all of the displays can be walked up to, under and/or touch. Kind of brings it to reality when you stand beneath the wing of a B25 or right next to a B58 Hustler. Course I'm a military airplane fanatic.

Speaking of VWHQ...are you going to have to move with them?

Re: Good Week @ 996Outpost.com
Yeah I looked for a better pic to show it, but that railing puts you just out of arm's reach of the nose and wing tips.32wildbilly wrote: ↑Wed Jan 13, 2021 9:16 am Awesome!

You are slightly more removed from the Enola Gay due to anti-war asshats throwing paint on it early on
Another feature of the Annex that makes it really worthwhile for aviation fans is that they have a viewing area where you can watch them work on restoring aircraft. Before kids that get bored in 5 seconds, the wife and I have stood there for over an hour at a time watching them work.
Hmmm.... Need to take another trip with the Hasselblad and see what interesting things I can find...
