Be honest, which would you rather purchase...
1. a 25 year old low-mileage (under 50K miles) Porsche 996.1 C2 base in perfect cosmetic condition with regular basic service for $25K-$30,000 OR...
2. similar 25 year old high-mileage (over 100K miles) Porsche 996.1 C2 base in rough cosmetic condition that just had a full engine rebuild by a respected shop for $13K-$15,000?
3. Curtain number three. Roll the dice!

What's rough cosmetic condition? Needs paint, or has dents? Number 3 gives us an out, but between 1 and 2 I would take 2. Mileage doesn't really matter if the engine was just rebuilt (although you'd have to be ready for clutch, suspension, etc.) and you can take your time with the cosmetics.

I choose #1 simply because it seems the cosmetic items are the ones that are hard to come by, anymore. Even if I pay your high end at $30,000 I'm making a pretty safe gamble with complete service history and even if I do end up with a roller down the road at least it's a NICE roller that I don't have to hobble together parts from 15 different ebay part-outs to try to make something that's passable at 25 feet.
I know I make a lot of jokes about this but if I'm being completely honest and vulnerable with you guys then yes there is absolutely an aspect of Porsche ownership to me that is cosmetic. I know there's a spectrum of this and unfortunately I'm on the end of the spectrum that sells bumper stickers. I like my premium automobile to be immaculate. There's plenty of FASTER cars that are totally fine to be a bit ratty that I could choose to own if that were my end goal.
I enjoy the aspect of caring for a car and keeping it in in a form that represents its best self.

Here's Eric, a man that is going through the last stage of his life. Was just diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. He plans to spent the remaining part of his life rebuilding his Porsche 912E for his 14 year old son to have. While talking with Jake, he noticed my car and said it looked familiar. Long story short, he happens to be friends with the original owner. Small world we live in folks. Short life too and so make each day your best.
