24 Hours of LeMans 2018 this Saturday

Post by OceanBlue2000 » Fri Jun 15, 2018 9:41 am

As we all (should) know, our favorite marque has historically done very well at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. I'm a casual motorsport viewer, so someone school me on this year's field.

It looks like Porsche factory racing (?) is entering two cars (the Rothmans and the Pink Pig)? What other teams/drivers in Porsches should I root for? They're not entering their LMP1 cars this year, correct? Does that leave Toyota the overall winner, or will Porsche win a "class"? So much confusion, but still fun to watch.

If you're not aware, here in the states all 24 hours are being broadcast on Velocity (likely preempting several hours of shows in which a guy wants a car done, the other guys don't have time to do it, there's a big problem, but then everything's solved, the end).

Correct; this is why Porsche built their "unrestricted" LMP1 car to set lap records this year. Toyota is the presumptive winner so long as no back-markers run into them at night, or so long as they run a clean race in general.

I kinda hope Alonso wins. I’d like to see him take a few more shots at winning the Indy 500, which will probably be more likely if he’s going for the Triple Crown.
