I hear these things always "Ace" an emissions test, as well...
Considering that they just plug into the OBD port and believe what the ECU tells it, they sure do

And they fixed that anyway. Well... I know one that hasn't been...
Wait..."they" fixed the ones "they" got caught on...are there more, probably...and it is pretty funny that the "E" guys just trust what the CPU tells them.

Last time I lived in Chicago suburbs(2003-2005) I had to emission test my 1993 300ZX. No OBD nothing. They put a big barn fan in the front, tied it down on the roller and flat ran the dogsh!t out of it. Problem was the barn fan was blowing over the hood because the front is too low. When I drove off I noticed the temp gauge was pegged! Few blocks later it was coming back down and besides it passed.
Never gonna make you cry...

Yeap. All TDIs were either fixed or bought back by VAG, except for the few rogue assholes like myself that have so far refused the lure of $$$ ($4500ish in my case) to come in and have the fix applied. Enough people have had it done that it sounds like it really isn't castrating the things, but there is still the principle to consider (the "Fuck CARB with a salt soaked splintering broomstick" principle).

Yeah VA used to always do the rollers too and the first "test" on the P!g was my first experience with the OBD method. Thought that maybe it was something diesel specific, but the last "tests" on the 996 and BMW were also that way.

Now they have roadside sniffers that supposedly do the test as you drive by (for which you have to pay $10 if you want them to use that result...). Given that they put them where you'll be sitting in traffic and it's a good 5-10' away, however, I'm not sure that is any better than the "believe the ECU" approach...

Wait, they'll pay you $4500 to get it fixed and you are refusing.

KC, you don't want DTM money, you want gnat money.

They already gave me $4500 just for owning it and agreeing not to sue them myself. Since I have no issue with the vehicle and knew enough about the industry to know that they weren't really meeting the numbers in the real world (like everyone else), I never had any intention to sue anyway so I took that free money. The audacity with which they gave the finger to EPA/CARB was just icing on the cake in my opinion

The other $4500 is payable if I get the fix applied prior to some deadline that may or may not have already passed. On my model year it is new cats and ECU reprogramming. I still don't believe that they can do that with their claim of no performance/MPG impact, but I will give that it doesn't sound like it is a noticeable amount to most people (e.g. you really need to dyno it before and after to see the diff).

Besides, I'd just blow it on something silly like track days or crap for the baby...

You're sending your wallet?

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

Gone hunting with Alec Baldwin and Dick Cheney. Back soon.
