Well, after 5 years and 40,000 miles with my 996, it's finally time...
Re: Well, after 5 years and 40,000 miles with my 996, it's finally time...
Our first was done about 36k. The tech said it was about half gone and it was already out for an RMS. At the time we put that on it in it's first 2 years so it seemed to make sense to save the cost of pulling the transmission again in 2 years. It only took another 10 years to get to 70k so not the best spent money as it turned out
When we had the transmission rebuilt at 70k the clutch and flywheel (believe that was still the factory one) were both done and needed to go.
When the mileages got mentioned on Rennlist (dammit) some people acted as if I was some insane maniac constantly dropping the clutch or something.
Based on the original change having a "halfway" estimate we may have gotten closer to the "accepted" 80k range. If the flywheel wasn't replaced at that time (pretty sure it wasn't without digging through the file) then I suppose that as it neared it's end it was taking the new clutch along for the ride. I guess we'll see if our next one is needed around 110k or 150k which at recent usage will be when it is around 50 or so...

I assume you're speaking about the clutch? Or, the IMS?

Me? Clutch. IMS had ~70k and 12 years.

Damn, both of my go-to Indies are booked solid. Black Forest will start on 9/4...
I think I'm going to park the car, put it on the charger, and pull off the wheels and get them refinished properly while I'm waiting for the 4th to roll around...

91,000 miles and the original clutch works fine...

Between the reused flywheel and living at the top of a ridiculous steep hill, I had low expectations for clutch life. 40K is acceptable to me...

Nope - turns out I can't. Flywheel was in great shape. I was assuming the flywheel springs were toast and that it would be causing collateral damage...but I was completely wrong.
