Help with potential purchase

Post by pcasanova » Sat Sep 15, 2018 6:30 am

Was not looking, but this just came up. Might be a scam, but texted seller.

If not a scam, what are some of the typical red flags on a car like this (besides missing the 3rd pedal)? I see the tail in the up position, so chances are hydraulics are messed up.

That's a clean looking car. Looks like it has been well loved both in looks and by the odo (my guess for the price).

Not a TT guy, but checking for signs of coolant leaks as the pipes can let go if they haven't been pinned (engine out deal IIRC) is the big one I remember.

I find it interesting that both headlights show renewed!? Given the price of new ones I wonder why? Front end damage??? Both radiator fans renewed...?? I would definitely do some CarFax type investigating first.

Spoke to owner, sounds like a nice guy.

Received copy of Carfax (when he purchased it), so far no accident reported. It is a northern car, Illinois.
CarFax shows 3 pervious owners + Current Owner.
Lots of "Service Contract Claim's", not sure what that is.

Looking to see how I can post the CarFax PDF here, not as easy as other forums.

Current owner was previous mechanic so he has done of the work himself. So far, needs paint correction (nicks on bumpers, etc.) and possible brakes. Going to try to go see it tomorrow and take it from there.

To post a pdf, in Adobe Acrobat, just save it as a jpg. Then, post the jpg.

Looks like a decent car. I'd try to get it closer to $30k, given it is a tippy with well over 100k miles.

This is what I need help with. Thinking the same. Apparently, people have been beating him up with $22K offers.

Was not even looking, but this seems like a decent deal if no major issues are found.

One of my concerns is that it's a 2001 and kind of unique. From my understanding 2002+ models had several "updates".

Looks to have been well cared for. Even though it has high miles in the world of 996TTs, 118k miles over 17 years is what, 7k miles per year? Some of the most common 996TT problems are unique to 6 spped manuals. For example the slave cylinder, clutch replacements, 2nd gear popouts and worn synchros. Look for coolant leaks around the front bumper as the OE radiators generally fail around the inlets and are a common issue.

The updates on 2002 to 2005 models are minimal. You get a glovebox and improved cupholder design. The X50 package became available as an option in 2002, and I believe the PCCB brakes did too (neither was available in 2001). In 2003, the MOST optical fiber wiring was introduced into the stereo systems, but generally that is regarded as a PITA to work with if you want to update your stereo system. I believe those are the main differences. Oh yeah, the early 2001 models came with "nose warts" that basically require a new bumper cover to remove, but I don't recall seeing them on this one.
