It took me nearly a YEAR to get an electrician out to our place in Big Bear to troubleshoot an issue in the garage.

It's a good time to know how to actually do shit.

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

I can't tell you guys how many electrical things I have fixed during my life. Thanks to the RR apprenticeship home study lesson books. The program was timed for two years. I finished in eight weeks. Not because I'm smart it was just that easy. Of course my Dad having been a gunnery control petty officer in the Navy and a former RR electrician himself did hurt.

Getting competent technology-related service out in "the country" is damned near impossible. The one company/guy in my area claiming to offer network installation services apparently lacks the tech skills to return a simple phone call. That's why I've become a self-taught Master Ethernet Networking Guru (tm) for my property. I've got a table covered in P2P radios and accessories that I'll be installing to replace the direct-buried Cat5 cable distributing internet around the property that shit the bed during a storm a week or so ago. It doesn't take a lot of learnin' to install and configure a functional home ethernet network. Any high-school nerd could make an excellent and honest living providing that kind of service. I could say the same for plumbers, electricians, ...

I can do most things electrical, but I don't f@ck with replacing circuit breakers. That was the problem with the Big Bear garage - a GFCI breaker got zapped during an electrical storm, and I'm not gonna blow a fingertip off working in the breaker panel.

Shut the main off first then verify no voltage present with meter. Fingers intact. It's only 110v. Now 240v or 480v with my age comes some wisdom...

Dude! You pour molten metal just for kicks. What's a little electricity gonna hurt?

I'm the guy who will touch the bus bars just because it seems tempting. So nope.

Ah...moth flame issue. I see. Leave buss bars alone.

Seriously house 110v white-black-bare and the occasional green(traveler). Easy peasy.

To clarify - the fried item was a GFCI breaker, not a GFCI outlet; repair required removing the metal "don't blow your fingers off" cover on the breaker panel. Maybe easy peasy for some folks, but not for this self-destructive moron.

I read GFCI breaker and yes the metal cover comes off. That's the hardest part of the job, but I understand your issue and agree with you. Comfort level and knowing oneself is important as it relates to safely when competing a task.
