Yea, sometimes its truly like walking on egg shells on some topics over there on that other platform. People need to laugh a little more and quit being a bunch of he/his/him pussies.

I've very pleased with the deal even though it's pretty much a base Carrera. Gonna be a little different for me. I've been used to driving the mk2 996 3.6L VarioCam+ Carreras with e-gas and the 08 Cayman which handles and corners so much tighter than the rear-engine 911 platform. This Carrera has been driven (130K miles) and not babied. The original owner serviced it religiously. I'm buying it from the second owner. The engine was completely rebuilt back stock in 2016 and so I'm hoping to enjoy it before any major work. But she needs new tires, brakes, prolly shocks, etc. The exterior paint is overall pretty decent, but paint correction, PDR, and bumper respray are definitely in order. This car would make Gnat proud! (see picture)

Currently it's over at Jake Raby's domain. He's agreed to inspect and give me the low down over the weekend. Hopefully the list of things that need to be done won't be too long. As you all pretty much know, Jake is a big fan of the early '99 models and so this one should be a thumbs up from him. We'll see.
Just noticed something very interesting. Many people believe that Porsche never recognized even after the settlement in the class action suit, that IMS failure was a big problem. Many have claimed that their Porsche dealership act like they know nothing of the problem and don't offer any type of replacement service. I'm sure y'all heard or read other stories as well over the years.

Just reading through my 996's Carfax. I noticed that Swickley Car Store (the Porsche dealership that sold the car to the original owner) actually swapped out the IMS bearing during clutch service in 2012. This is a dual row bearing car. Vetty vetty interested Sherlock!

Ok, but why? While they don't offer a replacement service for a "good" bearing that's been known to fail, but I don't see how they could leave a bearing that has already failed. In other words, if they're replacing the clutch and see that the bearing is no longer sealed, wouldn't they recommend replacement? I wish your documentation was more explicit about why this was replaced. Maybe there's a work order you can get your hands on that says why they replaced it.

My wild guess its because it was at the peak of the Eisen vs. Porsche class action lawsuit ... (coughs) settlement and seemed the right thing to do at the time? During a short period after the class action lawsuit, Porsche was even selling IMS bearing kits for the dealerships, but that was quickly halted. Skip (PorscheTech3) could explain it better since he spent more than a decade with them on the service level. It seems most dealerships would just swap out engines when they failed instead of rebuilding them from catastrophic failure. There seems to be many stories that claim that they (i.e. dealerships) didn't consider the IMS bearing a service item and so beyond changing out the flange and seals, they didn't touch the bearing. That's pretty much a consistent story among owners I've read over the years.

I'll see if I get any paperwork on the car. It's still at Flat 6 Innovations being checked out. Interesting enough, Jake Raby is rebuilding an aircooled engine for a guy that knows the original owner of the car. Just happened by coincidence. He saw the car and remembered it. Wow... small world.
