Ok "old man get of my lawn" rant time. This morning the wife had on one of the morning shows and it was advertising one of their bits about people being injured while their noses were glued to their phones. You've seen the vids people walking in to poles, trees, moving traffic, etc. This bring me to my rant: yesterday while grocery shopping I needed a product on the top shelf in a refrigerated area. I'm 6'2" with a 72' wingspan. So as I enter the area and find standing in front of where I need to access is a late teen/early 20's young lady with her nose in her phone. I figure she is researching about some of the products that are in the area to determine which she may want so I politely stayed back and patiently waited. After a lapse of time it became apparently she was doing something not related to the products she was blocking but simply engrossed in some sort of social media. She had no awareness that I was standing by her. I said excuse me and she turned about 1/4 away from me never looking up and not moving away from the location I needed to get to. She was about 5' nothing so I thought fine and started to reach above her to get what I needed. I stopped when I realized it would be invading her personal space and said excuse me this time a little louder. She then took 1/2 of a shuffle step to the side again never showing any awareness of my presence. Screw it I reached over her and got what I needed, put it in the cart and walked off shaking my head. When I looked back she had disappeared around the corner.

This is the first time I have ever witnessed this phenomenon up close and personal. It was almost like she was in a hypnotic trance completely immersed. She had absolutely zero awareness of her surroundings. If people "go there" while driving this is more than just distracted driving and I more fully understand accidents caused by phone use.

Thanks I feel better now and plan to give phone using drivers even more space than I do now...

My favorite retail store phenomenon is when I'm in an aisle looking at something and someone new appears in the aisle, they will immediately go to where I'm at and want to look there. For example, if I'm at Walmart in the aisle with the shaving accessories, and I'm looking at the section containing razors, the new person will want to look at the razors, even though they really only want shaving cream, which is in a section 10 feet down the aisle. If I'm looking at a clearance rack looking at XXL size garments, the person will initially go to that section even though they are looking for size Medium. It's uncanny - I noticed it a few years ago, and now I just laugh about it. Now when I see in my peripheral vision someone enter the aisle, I just step back from what I'm looking at because I know they are going to make a beeline for that section. Generally, they poke around for 3 or 4 seconds until they realize what they want is further down the aisle and they move on.

^^This is essentially why my wife and I don't allow our boy to interact with screens while he's still so young. This extends to meals as well - even though he's not the best guest he has to sit at the table with us. I know this is where most parents of young kids utilize the iPad. I'm hoping it works...

Oh and I and speaking of the boy I'm going to use my 996 to fling him around the block a few times this afternoon. He's getting into cars and it puts a big dumb smile on my face. (He is 1 y.o. so he likes being in them at least ;) )

Sorry...my apologies. I meant to put my old man rant post in Good Week...I was immersed in social media while writing the post and placed it in the wrong thread! Maybe some understanding mod would move it for me.

LOL it's ok Billy I tried to salvage the derailment a little bit. Just say you used your 996 to calm down after Mrs. Millennium made you lose your faith in humanity.

Yikes. Thanks for THAT image. :(

I took the Porsche out for a highway warm up and other 'excersize' and did a few errands - ending up at the grocery store. While inside with my extensive grocery list, I forgot which car I was driving.

People watched me load up to see if it would all fit in the 911. Hell, I did not even have to open the bonnet ;) Front and back seats did the trick, altough a couple of bags toppled over so I had to recover some items from under the seats. This is a quick shot of the last of it:
