Of course it starts up fine when THEY jump it

Needed an oil change and inspection anyway so getting it's charging system checked out while it's in there...

So apparently the battery was putting out a whooping 35 cranking amps... Yeah...

Of course it wants attention while it's there:
- CV boot is torn on a front axle and their experience is that 9/10 of the time when they disassemble it to put the new boot on they find that the shaft is damaged and needs replacement (so fuck it, I'll drive it until it shows problems).
- Time for front breaks. Both pads and rotors. Calibers are fine though.
- Flush the rads
- Clean the rads and body drains

Rest of the charging system looks good though, so at least I've got that going for me...

You told them to F*** the front axle. How much do they charge for that?
I assume a bit more than fingering the sump?

Needs new rotors like they'd like to sell you new rotors or needs new rotors like they actually measured them and they are below spec?

Just drive it up here Saturday and we'll swap in new pads between ordering lunch and the food arriving.

Nah, this is a good crew. It's a measurement issue.

Back in 2014 I had an Indi do the front left side. Boot, two clamps and inner seal for less than $500. Of course that was three years ago and cheap midwest prices! Cv joint was good.

It rained here the past two days, so with the salt off the roads, I took the boy to his cub scout meeting. Didn't get out of third, dammit.

However, since I have been using the car very very rarely with bad weather, twice now I have noticed a clunk pulling out of the garage. I think its coming from the passenger side front wheel. It happens only once when the car first moves, and not again. No CELs. It feels like the brake caliper freeing itself up. It hasn't been super cold but the car is in an unheated garage. Is the caliper freezing up? I am noticing a little rust on the front rotors, which i changed over the summer. Could that be it?

In any case, the next car project is the Pinewood Derby. I am obsessed.

I was only driving my 996 on the weekends. And I had the same noise, once the car moved it made a clunkin' sound and that would be the last time it occurred for the weekend. I thought maybe it was the parking brake making a little noise upon release.

I thought of that too, but it really sounds like its coming from the front wheel (which could be a function of it bouncing off the garage wall or something). I think next time I park the car I'm not going to engage the brake, just leave it in gear. If it still clunks, that eliminates the PB as a suspect.
