My hood tag states my original engine was s/n is M96/03-662-0960-10, but the actual engine number in the car is M96/03-662-0184-7
Interesting, b3. So we can be lead to believe that someone replaced your engine, though not through Porsche? Looks like you got one from further up the production line. My understanding is that any replacement engine from the factory would have been stamped "AT".
I had the information wrong as pointed out by GH996. My hood tag number is actually - M96/03-662-G9600-10. It's hard to make out because my tag is very faded. My third number could be G9601. Maybe your eyes are better than mine. :D

The serial numbers are not printed on the hood tags. The third set of numbers (G9600) is actually the transmission type.

Lots of good info in this thread. Gotta love 996 owners with an internet habit!!

Quick update: Perimeter has shipped me my parts order. They are just awesome. I’ve attached a photo of my hood sticker for completeness.

I agree w/ bfreak’s analysis in that my car must have had an engine swap somewhere down the line. I pulled a carfax and all 14 service entries are from the local Porsche dealer. There is no mention of an engine swap. I’ll drop by the dealer sometime next week to see if they have anything about an engine swap. If they don’t, I guess I’ll have to hunt down the previous 2 owners.

At this point, all I really want to know is if the engine has more or less miles on it than the odometer. I’m thinking I need to find the shop that did the swap and they should be able to tell me the miles on the engine swapped in and the miles on the car at the time.

Thanks again to everyone that participated.

m96/03at6657716 What does this # tell me? Said to be a factory replacement in 05 or put in an 05 (I need to clarify) with 40K on it now.
