Feel bad for the PO, but I've been there. I dumped a car for $500 over a $30 part after I had spent $8k on it in the preceding 6 months. At some point enough is enough.

I know we talk about parting as an option, but is that still true for a car in HI? Don't they get screwed in shipping costs to/from the mainland and I'd expect a more limited market there on the islands too.
Total gamble...It may end up with a big rubber band as a wind up

Beautiful car; just hope the engine is not toast for your sake.
Yup, right here in the state. I too hope it's not toast but figure at $5K it's better than spending $17K+ and having it turn into toast.
I expect toast but could get lucky.
Now I need to get some codes read!
A lil' burn on your toast can be easily scrapped off. :D I predict it's something straightforward that can be repaired ... maybe not cheap... but will be fixed. My gut feeling is the engine is still good. However, there is a slight chance the group that did the latest service did something wrong or the Dad's kid did something gravely wrong. But as others have mentioned, you could easily get your $5K back by parting it out or reselling it as a roller. Funny thing, it looks like my car. I miss those Carrera II BBS wheels!

I'll be straight up here Bill... I thought I got a slammin' great deal on my 996, but if you get this car checked out and it turns out to be something simple, then I'll be the first to admit we've all witnessed the deal of the century in the Porsche world!

I wish you all the best! Keep us all posted... we're rootin' for ya! ;)

He tried to start it again??? Oh goodness.... Whhhhyyyy!!!! :o

Based on the worst case scenario...

The next step is to decide what direction you want to take based on how much you want to dump into it. Personally, I would take a deep breath now that you own it and send it to a trusted Porsche shop there on the island for a full evaluation. I would think you have about three options if the engine needs to be rebuilt - 1.) Porsche short block 2.) Full reconstruction 3.) Used engine

You're looking at about $10,000 - $25,000 IMHO

Now, if the "noise" is over exaggerated by the previous owner, there is a slight chance that it could be something less expensive to resolve, but based on the new evidence so far, my initial thoughts were wrong. But I'm still hoping the best for YOU. ;)

Keep us updated on the progress.

Man and here I am actively hunting a roller down. Best of luck, Bill. I'll definitely be following this one. This could end up being a great deal for you.

How much you wanna spend. Got a nice coupe in roller price range on craigslist with a rebuilt title at 90K. Run.. Mk2.

He had it listed for $11,900, but just recently raised his price. Looks like it has a few "minor" problems.
