997 rattle
997 rattle
Hi
I have a 996 Targa, gull service history including new in a bearing.
After a 150 mile drive ...perfect...turned engine off and it said check oil level.
Next day checked and added a bit more, started the engine and poured then .....horrible sound like a bag of spanners,
Looking at forums could be a tensioner, I have a 10 video of the noise but any help would be much appreciated.

Jack,
On the dash indicator, how full was the oil BEFORE you added more oil? (see picture) Did it look like the attached picture or was it much higher on the bar graph?
Re: 997 rattle
Hi
It was in the middle but the dip stick was low.....hence I topped it up

Re: 997 rattle
Ok let's break this down so that we can better understand the situation....
1. You went for a 150 mile drive and upon parking it and turning it off, the car was alerting you to "Check oil level". It didn't alert you to "low oil", but to check oil level, correct?
2. I'm assuming you waiting 24 hours, correct? Then you turned the key on and the electronic indicator displayed the oil level was at mid point on the oil level bar graph? Am I right?
3. You then checked the dip stick and proceeded to add addition oil, right?
4. You then proceeded to start the car and the horrible noise began. Am I correct?
After you added oil (before starting the car), did you check the electronic oil level indicator to see where the oil level was at?

Evening
Thanks for your reply
All correct
After adding the oil I only checked the dip stick not dash board.
Dip stick was still low but better, added a bit more and started up.
There had never been any noises even when cold
Ran for a couple of mins then..........sounded like a loose chain
No a bang, or a knock just nail butting rattle
If you rev the noise momenteraly stops.......
Thanks for your reply

Re: 997 rattle
At first I was going to say the problem may be associated with overfilling of oil, but I'm not sure a rattling sound is attributed to the problem. Just ask the others on the site, getting a "rattling sound" is very bad news. I don't want to be the one to diagnose your car, but you definitely DON'T need to drive it or even start it until a qualified Porsche mechanic closely evaluates the source of the sound.jack777 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 17, 2018 2:34 pm Evening

You title says 997, but is this definitely a 996 Targa? What year model?
Could you please upload the video to YouTube, Vimeo, or other streaming site so that we can listen to the noise?
